2.0 out of 5 stars Riley's welcome to it!, 20 Jul 2009
On the face of things, 'Life of Riley' should be a decent sitcom. True, the 'sit' - two divorced parents marry and bring their kids together under one roof - has been done time and time again, but this isn't as cliched as it might sound; instead of throwing endless 'You're not my real mom!' tantrums, Maddy's stepchildren seem merely amused by her attempts to be a cool, matey stepmum. The combination of Caroline Quentin's everywoman persona and comic acting skill should work; Neil Dudgeon is a reliable choice to play dad Jim. So why isn't 'Life of Riley' funny? It all comes down to the script which, while not without the odd amusing moment, is largely unrealistic and more than a little lazy. Example: Earnest Daughter who constantly has a new Save the Whale/Tiger/Duck-Billed Platypus cause to obsess about is doing a sponsored swim. 'Are you going to give me the money now or later?' she asks her dad. 'It'll have to be later', says Dad, 'because right now I'm going to sponsor a yoing Chinese boy to bring us a takeaway' - a 'joke' which the assembled company falls about laughing at. Is there really a teenager in the world who would laugh at their father saying that?

As well as the overdose of lame gags, we also get one or two which are bizarrely offensive. Maddy giving her son, who is being bullied, his Gran's emergency fall alarm springs to mind. Of course poor old Gran then DOES have a fall, and isn't found for hours. Hilarious eh? I could laugh at pensioners trapped in agony all day long!

I stuck with this series until about halfway because of some decent lines in the first episode and because Caroline Quentin is such a likeable comic actress. But after a few episodes it became obvious that Riley's life, far from being a laugh a minute, was just plain pointless.
