Product Description

Anyone with a fascination for graves, death, tombs and crypts will simply love this 1962 classic starring Ray Milland and Hazel Court, featuring blood-stained coffins from the scratches of the living corpses that lay within... One of the most morbid and brooding horror movies based on a story by Edgar Allan Poe.

Ray Milland is tortured by the terrible morbid fear of being buried alive - enhanced during the discovery of a recently opened grave where scratch marks are found on the inside of the coffin lid, and the corpse within is found in the 'stiffened' scratching position! Milland almost drives himself insane with the fear and builds himself various contraptions in an attempt to safeguard himself from the dreadful fate. Almost having overcome this irrational phobia due to the love of his beautiful young wife, he is then taunted by an 'unknown' force.

This horror movie is unique, in that the story has an unlikely heroine, and the climax to the movie is exceptionally ghastly, but at the same time, manages to bring tears to the eyes when it is revealed just who was the only person who tried their best to protect him from the dreadful end...

Great vintage stuff!

Despite almost universally negative reviews on its release this very free adaptation of Poe's classic tale did well at the box office and now, at last, has arrived on blu ray with a fair but unremarkable transfer in this German edition with English language soundtrack and optional subtitles. Ray Milland gives a barn-storming performance and is well supported by Hazel Court et al. The thunder crashes, terrible things happen, and a few sequences ( the electrocution of the father etc) are surprisingly effective. The present "restoration" falls short of the recent release of "The Fall of The House of Usher" in terms of the detail, clarity and colour saturation of the image but it's not bad and certainly better than previous SD releases. The design is of course stunning and the expressionistic and highly theatrical exterior sets provide the perfect ambiance for this gothic rendering of several of Poe's favourite themes. The plot is nicely convoluted and do you know what - there were enough red-herrings provided that I didn't actually work out "who did it"! An enjoyable "over the top" treat and certainly recommended to those who can cope with the absence of Vincent Price!

Shelley Winters enjoys her most iconic movie role in Bloody Mama, Roger Corman's no holds barred biopic of `Ma' Barker, leader of the infamous Depression-era outlaw clan, and also the inspiration for the character of `Ma' Jarrett in Raoul Walsh's classic White Heat. Produced by Corman's usual studio, American International Pictures, in 1969, this film was made quite quickly and was obviously designed to cash in on the success of Bonnie and Clyde, which had been a runaway hit a short time before.
The film's rushed shooting schedule and low budget are visible on screen, but the film moves at quite a pace, and contains several striking performances that to help paper over the cracks in its production. Featuring as members of the Barker gang are Bruce Dern, Don Stroud (best known for playing villains in the likes of Coogan's Bluff and the James Bond movie Licence to Kill), and a very young Robert DeNiro, whilst western veteran Pat Hingle features as an unfortunate kidnap victim. Given the era in which it was made, the story it tells, and the fact that it is an exploitation movie through and through, it is no surprise that Bloody Mama is a somewhat salacious and distasteful film, and one that paints a much less romantic and attractive (but more realistic) portrait of the gang in question than was found in White Heat.
Far from being a classic, Bloody Mama will nonetheless appeal to those who enjoy bloody exploitation movies, and also to Robert DeNiro fans who want to catch him in one of his earliest roles. For those who may be seeking a far more polished and appealing film telling a similar story, AIP's 1973 version of Dillinger, starring Warren Oates, is infinitely superior.

Not since "She" has there been a more bizarre post apocalyptic movie. In this "Logan Run's" film everyone over 25 dies. leaving the world divided in various outlaw anarchist group. The story centers on a hippie couple who preach open love on their way across Texas to Pueblo to find the oracle and "The Answer." They follow billboards as one was traveling on I-95 to "South of the Border."

The various gangs include those with golf carts and a those who "rape, kill, and loot" dressed up as a high school football team complete with an marching band and cheerleaders.

The humor was offbeat which explains the 4 stars. In one scene the woman says "Let's create and ancient legend...anyone who bathes naked in this pool of water after the first cold wintry wind will find the key to happiness." At this point her boyfriend finds a hotel key on the ground, "Sands Casino and Hotel, Las Vegas.

The film talks about sex and rape but doesn't show anything "R" rated. Young girls screaming being chased and thrown on a bed is about as risque as it gets.

No f-bombs that I recall. I watched the film for free on "Epix Drive-in" which normally doesn't edit anything out.

This is a Roger Corman film with regrettable roles by Cindy Williams, Ben Vereen, and Taliha Shire. Mike Castle who played Burroughs in this film went on to become the Claw salesman in Galaxina.
