Product Description

Directed by Rene Clement this taut suspense thriller received unanimous critical acclaim. Charles Bronson, at the peak of his powers, plays arrogant Investigator Harry Dobbs. When a woman murders a man who raped her and disposes of his body, she thinks she is safe - or is she? Harry seems to have a special interest in this missing 'Rider on the Rain' - is it the money he had in his flight bag or his connections to the underworld?

Optimum's parent company Studio Canal in France released the French dub in 2003 on DVD and although it's a stunning print it has Charles Bronson's character dubbed in French! So this DVD released on September the 21st will be in English at long last with Bronson's actual voice. Canal have supplied the master to Optimum and this print is fantastic. As an option, it will also have the French audio track but, unlike the Canal DVD in France, English sub-titles to go with that!

At last a decent print of this 60s thriller starring Marlène Jobert and Charles Bronson directed by René Clément ("Les Felins"/"A Doll's House"). This release contains 2 integral versions (English and French) with the French one being superior in picture quality and a little longer. But make sure to buy the correct DVD-version of this movie:

Optimum - ASIN: B001TJKVTQ

all other prints (eg Orbit ASIN B000EHT3O8 Rider On The Rain [DVD]) I've watched so far (2) were mediocre/awful!

Optimum have made an excellent job of producing a superb quality DVD of this lesser known ( but undeservedly so ! ) Bronson film,Bronson and Jobert put in two great performances in this murder mystery movie - Bronson as the tough ( but soft centered ) army investigator and Jobert as the resourceful rape victim, and their on screen chemistry works very well in the film indeed,Bronson gets to showcase his considerable ( but much underated ) acting talents in this film, and it just goes to show that Bronson didn`t need the "action film props" to prove what a great and charismatic actor he really was !

Very disappointing DVD from Orbit Media. The quality is not even as good as the Embassy VHS from the mid 1980's. The picture is blurred and there are little bits of scenes missing, mainly at the start. Truly terrible! On September the 21st 2009, Optimum will be releasing the beautiful widescreen transfer owned by Studio Canal in France! To date, that superior print has only been on DVD in France but in French audio but Optimum will release it complete and in the original English audio for the first time ever! Worth waiting for. Many comments on the IMDB verify this.

When a violent miscreant breaks into Melancolie Mau's house and rapes her, she takes her revenge by killing him, ashamed though, she takes the body and dumps it into the sea herself, before her husband returns home. However no sooner has she dumped the body than a certain Col. Harry Dobbs shows up and proceeds to follow her about. Dobbs is an army investigator and seems to know an alarming amount of information about not only the rapist, but also the young Mrs Mau, who although scared, is adamant she knows nothing of 'the body' which has been discovered. And when her husband, who is a pilot, has to leave for a few days, Col. Dobbs is given ample time with which to interrogate the young murderess and find out just what happened that night...

This is an absolute gem of a sleeper thriller, come love story. The cast are perfect, the dialogue is throwaway, yet mesmerising and the director gives us plenty of dippy characters and weird situations to keep the (this) viewer interested. It's not quite your usual 'Winner or Thompson' Charles Bronson action thriller, and those expecting some loose cannon cop, hitman or vigilante could be sorely disappointed, but if you fancy watching something that's well made and a little different, then this could be right up your street.
Deserves to be seen by a much wider audience, I thoroughly enjoyed this.
The other reviewers on here are spot on when they advise you to get the optimum release. It contains both versions (I've only seen the French one so far) and that was a very good print.

By Trevor Willsmer HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on 15 Sept. 2010
Format: DVD
From the days when Charles Bronson was yet to be typecast as cops or vigilantes and was working his way up to stardom in continental thrillers, Rene Clement's Rider in the Rain is an interesting psychological cat-and-mouse thriller that never really scales the heights but is a lot more intriguing that much of the star's more generic output. Marlene Jobert is raped by an intruder she subsequently kills, but out of a sense of shame - and possibly concerns over her jealous husband - disposes of the body rather than reporting it to the police, only for Charles Bronson's American stranger to suddenly start intruding on her life and asking her why she killed him. It soon becomes clear that he's got an agenda of his own that doesn't necessarily involve the police as he threatens, plies her with liquor and brings to the surface memories of her troubled childhood, with the odd reference to Alice in Wonderland (such as Bronson being described as having a Cheshire Cat smile) implying that all may not be as it seems as their relationship gets curiouser and curiouser...

A kind of companion piece to the more devious Someone Behind the Door, critics loved it back in 1970, Bronson thought enough of it to try to remake it in 1983 while Jim Morrison was reportedly so taken with it he was inspired to write Riders on the Storm, but it's more decent than great, feeling like it could have benefited from being shorter and tighter than its near two-hour running time. Optimum's UK DVD earns an extra star for including both the English language version and the simultaneously shot French-language version - not a dubbed print (although Bronson is dubbed) but alternate takes, running four minutes longer.
