4.0 out of 5 stars Still way above most other movies, 15 Oct 2009
I agree with the first reviewer that the Dardennes brother have made better movies (most notably Rosetta), but also think that it's a movie well worth watching. The acting is extremely good and the direction manages to be both strong and subtle. They've managed to make the movie primarily through the point of view of the main character, while keeping a kind of distance at the same time. (it's probably a bit confusing as an explanation, but it's so unusual in a way that you'd probably have to see the movie to get my point). As to whether you'll enjoy it or not, you'd rather be the type of person who enjoys the journey at least as much as the destination, or your reaction will be like the one of the second reviewer.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not the Dardennes' Best, But a Worthy Addition, 16 Jun 2009

Don't have much to say, but someone has to counter the clownish review here present. A certain repetition has crept into the Dardennes' oeuvre, which diminishes the impact of each successive film (at least since THE SON). But this is certain a very good film, and as good a place to start as any.

1.0 out of 5 stars SO DISAPPOINTING, 2 April 2009
By Michel Boucaud (Newcastle Angleterre) - See all my reviews

What is a good film?
In my opinion it's a film that gets both critical and public acclaim,a film that you want to watch 2,3 10 times,a film with a quality plot, a beginning,a middle and an end. Well, you will never find any of these in a Dardenne film.
No need to tell you the story.Reading a review, it looks great;then you watch it;the first hour is puzzling, the main actress does a good job, then comes the end :unspectacular, annoying, exasperating because no film should end like it does.I feLT robbed of my time,of the £20 I spent getting it from france before it got released in England.
I felt exactly the same with an earlier Dardenne film L'ENFANT.To think that the Belgian directors managed to get the golden palm at Cannes twice makes you wonder !
SILENCE OF LORNA could have been a great film with the script and a camera in the hands of a talented storyteller like KEN LOACH or MIKE LEIGH.The Dardenne brothers despite undeserved prizes, merit to remain largely unknown and ignored. As far as I am concerned I will never again watch any of their work and neither should you.Life is too short and there are thousands of better films available.
A BON ENTENDEUR SALUT.
