Although this extremely stylish haunted spaceship movie may be guilty of ripping off half a dozen better films (including Don't Look Now, Hellraiser, and especially Andrei Tarkovsky's great Solaris), it's difficult to deny the gothic razorblade effectiveness of the end result. Not a "fun" film by any stretch of the imagination, but a thrillingly ruthless shocker that may leave more susceptible viewers in need of a long shower and a high-voltage night-light. I am surprised at the harsh criticsm that this film has come in for here, and in other forums. It has been consigned by some to the stalk and slash section of the DVD rental shelves, while others dismiss it as second hand sci-fi. Personally I really enjoyed it. The blend of suspense, mystery, horror and gore is supplemented well by strong performances by Laurence Fishbourne and Sam Neill. Sure, some of the death scenes and other set pieces are a little hackneyed, but this is more than compensated for by that rarity amongst films - an original (and if you actually sit down and think about it, quite challenging)concept. On an intellectual level this questions our pursuit of knowledge (in this case technology) and asks us if we are fully prepared for what it could reveal. Top stuff.

I'm an Alien film fan, I enjoy a deep space claustrophobic scientific scare. Event Horizon is one of only a few films that has genuinely gave me a chilling unsettling fright and uneasy dreams - its Hellraiser (or Hellraiser as it should have been) in space. Wonderful horror concept, suspenseful, great characters, wonderful atmospheric detail. Great sci-fi movie, great horror movie.

I saw this film about 10 years ago for the first time and I remember thinking it was on a par with Alien and Aliens for pure science fiction horror. Although my wife disagrees (declaring it a stupid film) I think is one of the scariest films I have ever seen. A massive fan of science fiction horror, I found it gripping throughout with very original scenes and special effects. Watching it more recently, despite the fact it was made in 1997, I think it is standing the test of time and doesn't - yet - come across as dated. I am not a big Sam Neill fan but he is good in this film, however it is the quality of Laurance Fishburne's acting that ensures that this film maintains a strong performance throughout. I do not tire of watching this - particularly late at night with the lights out!

I was dragged to the cinema by a friend to see this movie. It scared both of us to the point that I will never watch it again. It scared me so much that I haven't watched horror since. For fans of horror, this is the perfect movie!

I've had mixed feelings about this film for a while, whilst I like a good science fiction film...the thoughts of mixing in a horror element didn't really appeal. I did however take the chance and picked up a copy of this a good few years back.

The story unfolds: Event Horizon is a starship that has been "lost" for a number of years (7 in total), but suddenly a distress signal is being picked up. A crew is dispatched to investigate what has happened to the ship and it's crew. Dr. William Weir (played by Sam Neill) is the ships designer and joins the rescue/investigation mission.

It's not the most original plot for a science fiction film (but it's ok all the same), the movie was a bit of a flop at the box office and got some fairly mixed reviews. My own take on it is..well it's not as bad as some say and in a lot of ways it's quite good. But it's not for everyone.

Cast wise Sam Neill does a decent job of the ship designer who later becomes somewhat "obsessed/possessed" with the ship. Supporting cast is quite good with Laurence Fishburne taking the part of the mission ship Captain Miller, Joely Richardson as the Lieutenant and a few other familiar faces...Sean Pertwee, Jason Isaacs and Kathleen Quinlan are all respectable enough in their roles.

Effects are quite good, setting the dark and moody scene with some effective lighting and sound effect. The horror aspect is a mixed bag, it turns out that the ship has been to a strange/evil place and the crew were losing control of themselves mentally. Despite the unlikely storyline, I quite liked the film. It falls into that place where it's certainly not a classic masterpiece, but really nowhere near as bad as some critics made it out to be.Read more ›

Whenever this film comes up in conversation (which admittedly is not that often) someone will invariably say, "Ooh...that's a nasty film."
'Event Horizon' is not an especially good film by any standard really but it does somehow touch on something which genuinely disturbs a lot of people. Once seen the movie is not easily forgotten (whether you found it delightful, disturbing or just dire!). Another reviewer here has described it as an evil film and I think there is something to that. It's one of those films that in watching 'The Making Of...' you would expect to learn of fires on set, cast members mysteriously injured or missing, ghostly apparitions in the studios etc.
I have a great fondness for this film because in some respects it does 'nasty' and 'creepy' very well indeed...whenever those lights start to flicker you really do start to feel a mite uncomfortable.
But there are a LOT of things wrong with it and I think other reviewers have pretty much covered them.

SOMETHING OF A PLOT SPOILER ON THE WAY

For me the biggest letdown is the plot mechanism whereby the haunting horror on the 'Event Horizon' takes its form from the crew member's greatest fears or regrets. To me this really smacks of the dreadful 'Eighties movie 'Flatliners' (see Edit below).
And that really does deserve a roasting in Hell.
