He's awesome, he's Rated-R, and so's his DVD!, 2 May 2009
Ten years. Has Edge really been in the WWE that long? Wow, time sure has flown. It really is amazing, as is the career of Adam Copeland, everything that he's accomplished and the impact he's made on the wrestling business.
Edge is truly one of the most remarkable success stories that WWE has ever produced, certainly in recent memory. He's done so many right things to establish his legacy, and he's also a bloke who's character has gone through so many changes.
A brooding loner, then subsequently member of the Brood, reeking of awesomeness with his brother Christian (Cage), a white-hot babyface, an unstable chaser of the world title, before finally finishing as the phenomenal Rated-R Superstar that we all know and love. Yet throughout all those evolutions, some things have remained completely unchanged in that decade of Edge's. Notably the facts that he's a fascinating character, absolutely dynamite on the microphone, reeks of charisma and of course, the fact that Adam Copeland is one of the most outstanding and exciting wrestlers to ever compete in WWE.
Edge: A Decade of Decadence is another 3-disc DVD set that we've all wanted to see. It's about time the man was honoured the same way that so many legends/superstars have been. God knows he's done enough to merit the treatment. And as expected, A Decade of Decadence is truly a production of high-quality.
WWE has actually put a unique twist on the presentation format for this programme. This is a compilation show hosted by the man himself. But unlike compilation shows past, Adam Copeland is actually in-character here while he talks about the matches included here. The Rated-R Superstar is sat down in a private room with a mega-bucket of popcorn, treating the experience as though he's at the pictures. To further add to the presentation, there are some absolutely fantastic movie-style trailers that hype up the matches.
Adam clearly has a fun time partaking in all this, and his expertise in promos and his Rated-R Superstar gimmick make the show's presentation work so well. In addition, the brilliantly compiled/edited trailers make the programme even more fun for the viewer. And the originality of it all is one of the set's highpoints.
But as clever and creative as all this is, I dearly would've preferred to see Adam Copeland the person, NOT Edge the character, host this and give an insight into his career. A real-life analysis from the person behind the character is what makes these superstar releases so enlightening, captivating and essential. Other notable DVD bios are testament to that. Don't get me wrong, I really like what's been done here. I just think it would've been even better if the show had been done in the hybrid fashion of career biography/match compilation.
Of course, that doesn't affect the overall brilliance of the DVD. Match-wise, A Decade of Decadence is phenomenal from start to finish. I was so pleased that Edge's first-ever singles PPV bout against the late, great Owen Hart was included. This was the first Edge match I ever saw and to this day it's one of my favourites. It's a superb wrestling bout that shows just how truly gifted he was at the beginning. There's no better match to kick things off than THIS one. Believe me.
The rest of the programme then consists of matches that best showcase/chronicle his development. Get ready to once again relive the revolutionary tag-team Ladder match from No Mercy 1999, with Edge and Christian against the Hardys. Like HBK/Razor Ramon at WM10, this was a bout that pioneered all the awe-inspiring stunts that we see in ladder matches today, and is by all accounts a PERFECT contest that made all those involved absolute stars. The triangle ladder match from WM16 that brought the Dudleys into the mix is equally classic that made for the greatest tag-team feud of all time.
Next, there is a diamond of an Intercontinental Championship bout as Edge takes on Hart-dungeon graduate Lance Storm, followed by a thrilling title-unification battle against Test (RIP). His white-hot Hair vs. Hair match against the one-and-only Kurt Angle shows that Edge was main-event material. And an equally good cage-match against Angle on SmackDown! proves that the feud did for Edge what the Bret Hart feud did for Steve Austin.
Other highlights are a great tag-title bout with his real-life hero Hulk Hogan, a fabulous (but brief) encounter with Mr. Perfect, an awesome battle against Eddie Guerrero, great street fights against Shawn Michaels and Matt Hardy, BLINDING Raw bouts against Rob Van Dam and Randy Orton, excellent world-title matches against Batista and Rey Mysterio, his classic hardcore wars against Mick Foley and at ECW One Night Stand, and of course, his shocking, unforgettable WWE/World title victories over John Cena and the Undertaker.
Edge's unforgettable feuds with Cena and Taker are what really made him a main-eventer. So naturally, we have some awesome bouts featuring them. With Cena, there's a cracking triple-threat title bout (also including RVD) as well as Edge's brilliant title defence from SummerSlam `06. With Taker, there's the VERY good TLC match from One Night Stand `06 and the FANTASTIC Hell in a Cell from SummerSlam `08 rounds up the collection with a really big bang.
Extras-wise, there's a highlight reel featuring the very best of Edge and Christian's antics. This is pure gold and will have you in hysterics. There's also two extra matches with Edge on guest commentary along with Matt Striker. These are a fantastic dark match against Christian and his historic first-ever IC title win against Jeff Jarrett. All this is brilliant, but so many more features could've been included, like additional interviews, segments, angles, career moments and the infamous live-sex celebration with Lita. Edge's matches with Benoit and Flair and his 2002 tag-team outings with Mysterio deserved inclusion as well.
But the faults don't change the facts. Edge: A Decade of Decadence reeks of awesomeness and is staggeringly high in quality. Fans WON'T be disappointed.

This is no Cena DVD, this has match quality and entertainment quality. Edge truely is one of the best and watching this DVD acknowledges this.

Decade of Decadence indeed..., 18 May 2009
About time WWE released a DVD on Adam 'Edge' Copeland, and this long-awaited compilation doesn't disappoint!
Plus Points:
- The wealth of matches are impressive, there's barely a bad one to be seen here; his bouts against Owen Hart, Lance Storm, Kurt Angle (including their Hair vs Hair stunner from Judgment Day 2002), Eddie Guerrero, Shawn Michaels, Matt Hardy, Mick Foley, Rob Van Dam, Randy Orton and The Undertaker are all particularily impressive.
- The DVD includes some matches from the TV shows not previously released on DVD.
- It manages to cover pretty much all of Edge's career (so far) over the 3 discs.
- The extras are decent, featuring a try out match between Edge and Christian from November 1997, an amusing 'best of' E&C featurette, and footage of Edge's first I.C. Title win from 1999.
- Edge himself does an entertaining job as host for the DVD.
Negatives:
- The format is a little off-putting - background is only offered to handfull of the matches here, which leaves the impression that the remaining bouts here are not as important.
- As good as some of the matches are on the DVD, there are still a few Edge bouts that should have been included; his WrestleMania XXIV bout vs The Undertaker was possibly the best of his career, and would have been better than the over-rehearsed TLC match at One Night Stand 2008 (which is on the DVD). Also it could have done with a few more Edge and Christian matches, as only two matches from his famous tag team are included (which are both great, admittedly).
- The matches against Mr Perfect and Kane are pure filler, and should not really have been included on the DVD.
Overall:
This DVD should be essential for WWE fans, one of the best collections of matches ever.
