The greatest game ever???, 2 Feb 2010
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Having not played the first game I had no idea what to expect from ME2. However after just a couple of hours playing time I could only come to one conclusion, this is the best game I have ever played. From the very first mission it draws you in and won't let go.
I spent the first half an hour or so just wandering round the Normandy (the ship on which you are based for the game), exploring the four decks which house your own living quarters/office, the armoury, the tech lab, flight deck & cargo hold among other things. The first things that struck me about the Normandy were the graphics and attention to detail, things which are carried on throughout the game making this one of the most visually beautiful games to date.
The game starts with you assembling a team of various different alien races to assist in the main mission of stopping the Collectors, which takes up a number of hours gameplay in itself. Within a couple of hours the missions are building up rapidly to ensure you always have a vast selection of missions to choose from. Some of these can be completed in a matter of 10 minutes where others can take well over an hour, meaning the game should be a very long affair, which trust me is no bad thing.
The only thing I found slightly confusing initially was navigating the various universes, but once you've worked it out it becomes second nature (and presumably if you have played the first game you already have an advantage). The combat controls are surprisingly easy to come to terms with considering how many different things there are to do.
Overall this is a fantastic game for which I can't find one bad thing to say. Since purchasing the game I've struggled to put it down. It has drawn me in like no other game has for as long as I can remember.
Buy it now...

I think my brain just melted, 8 Feb 2010
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Ok it took me 4 days of not sleeping and alienating most of my friends again... do wonder some times why they like me. Sorry back in the room, but I've finally completed it and what a game.
Mass effect 2 just blew my brain out plaid tennis with it then blasted adrenalin through my veins. Alright, now that I've laid my opinion of this game as one of the best games ever made and the second best sequel I've seen (the top place going to Kingdom Hearts 2) lets break it down a bit.
Alright well despite everything the game play is fairly similar. The same cover, shooty fun has been brought over from the original and it still works flawlessly, despite the rather unnecessary introduction of the gears of war button that sticks your back to a wall like it's magnetic. I'm also not a massive fan of the hole reloading idea. I actually really liked the cool down system that the old system used and having to continuously count my ammo gets on my nerves (especially when I'm absolutely certain the enemies don't have to!). Both served basically the same purpose. However, neither of these minor annoyances managed to significantly alter my enjoyment of this game.
The space travel has been altered adding new ways of travel and exploration. However, of all the parts of the game this part is the only one that is worse than the original. Alright travel is pretty much the same you use mass relays to get around and then travel around the star system. So what's the point of adding fuel???? For some reason some one thought it was a good idea to make you buy fuel in order to get from place to place. This doesn't add to the game, it doesn't add new challenges because you just re fuel every time you intend to travel from system to system. All it does is waste time and take away some character money??? Surly it would have been easier to just not give us as much money!
The second turd in the water pipe to this comes with exploration. This works by manually scanning a planet for resources with which you can then research upgrades for your team and ship. Fine nice idea, finally gives us a point to locate all the resources you ended up finding on the original. The problem is the mechanic for doing this. Again I have to ask who's idea it was to make you scan the entire planet with a tiney circle looking for the resources. Not only that the scanner moves at such a painfully slow rate! I actually got to the point were I had to turn on the TV to keep myself from getting board while playing these parts of mass effect. Sorry but any game that boors me that much has issues.
Having said that I am quiet gald to see the back of the driving stages from the original.
The graphics themselves haven't changed that much. Facial characteristics and environment textures are very much the same. Instead what's been added are truly spectacular vistas and often disturbingly immersive environments. The new levels and planets look amazing with each having it's own distinct feel.
But the show stopper is and will always be the story and the characters. The writers of this should be truly proud I haven't found a more gripping story in decades. And as always the characters are incredible, every one unique if a little two dimensional in places. There interactions and dialogue and the back story of each of them creates a magical spiralling intricate web of intrigue.
A fantastic game despite the odd quirk that the developers can be proud of!

Far better than the first, 29 Jan 2010
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
The first Mass effect was a flawed gem, the visuals were excellent and the story strong but the combat was often clumsy and the inventory system sometimes awkward. Now I have been playing this for abour 5 hours (much longer now but these statements are still true) and have made a dent in the game, I will say the combat is nicely improved taking what was good about the combat from the first and refining it, mixing squad tactics GoW style shooting and slight RPG elements.
I really enjoyed dragon age origins but Mass effect 2 is far more polished and ultimately pips it as best rpg of the last 12 months. Fallout 3 still holds the title for best rpg on the current generation IMO, but it is a very different experience.
The story is really compelling and the characters are really good, more interesting than last time around I must say.
I had doubts about how good it would be prior to playing it and I am glad to say it has surpassed my expectations. Some have critized the story for playing out likt a shopping list, sort of a fair point, but this is done to allow the freedom explore.
The space based elements are mostly improved with the sending of probes adding depth as well as the resource gathering element, sadly the mako sections have gone, allegedly because they were a weak section of the first game, I have to say I do miss them even though they were flawed. That said I have heard there is a DLC which introduces a tank to the procedings coming soon, this is exciting not only because it will open up another type of gameplay but it suggests a lot in the level of DLC support bioware are going to give this game.
After playing the game for longer I have been trying to work out in how the graphics are better, they look better thats for certain, I have come to the conclusion that it is the improved design and subtle details filled out more.
As mentioned in peoples comments the customisation is streamlined (dumbed down) this makes the game run more fluidly for action junkies but does lessen the fun of tinkering, it doesn't however ruin it completely like it did in marvel ultimate alliance 2. Also where it is cut down in someplaces it is expanded in others.
Despite these minor niggles it is still a very compelling game. Definitely the best Bioware game since Star wars KOTOR.
