Much prettier than what appears in pictures, 28 Feb 2009
This review is from: Samsung NC10 10.2-inch Netbook, Atom N270, 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Windows XP Home, Pink (Electronics)
I was thinking in getting a small laptop as i'm travelling a lot. What really made my mind that i fall in love with a white Samsung nc10 once i saw it in a store.
As i'm engineer, i was looking also for a high technical specification that would fulfil my needs, and after searching on the net and reading lot of reviews, the Samsung nc10 was always a winner. I was thrilled knowing that a pink version will be released, but was back and forth between pink and white. The pink one appears glossy and somehow as made in plastic, and i thought it might looks cheap. Finally i purchased a pink (order placed 2p.m. on Friday and received 10a.m. on Saturday - many thanks to Amazon), once i opened the box, i was really glad, it is a metallic pink, looks gorgeous, really small in a way to be carried easily but at the same time with an excellent screen and really good keyboard. Window setup went easily and the wireless and my mobile broadband work properly. I made setup for different programs that i use and put the netbook on a charger after more than 5 hours working on the battery. The processor is excellent, the storage is huge for such small laptop, and i would definitely upgrade the RAM to 2G (although the 1G RAM is not bad as long as you are not working on several programs simultaneously).
I have a very efficient 14.1" HP laptop, and thought there is no much size difference between the 10.2" and the 14.1", but definitely i was wrong; huge difference in both size and weight.
The netbook will not be a substitute for a regular PC or laptop especially for those who work extensively on programming, photo editing or just gamming, but it is definitely recommended for those who travel a lot or just for anyone who want to enjoy watching a movie or browsing the internet whilst having a cup of coffee outside or just laying in bed.

Overall, pretty happy with it.., 7 Mar 2009
This review is from: Samsung NC10 10.2-inch Netbook, Atom N270, 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Windows XP Home, Pink (Electronics)
Like Lamy the reviewer above, I was torn between the white or the pink. I knew for a fact that in real life the white was beautiful, a lovely pearly white in a matte finish, classy looking (I know it doesn't look that way in the press shots, but trust me it is). But, the idea of the pink was enticing. So in blind trust I ordered the pink, and it is very beautiful. Even though it is glossy it doesn't pick up and display fingerprints hardly at all like the black and blue have been known to do, so therefore doesn't look cheap or tacky. It actually looks pretty expensive. It's a nice dusky metalic pink, not a garish bubblegum pink, which I'm very happy about. In retrospect, I'm still not 100% sure that the pink is better than the white, as I liked the white for its understated class, but the more I look at my pink sammy the more I love it.
Performance wise it's pretty much faultless. Quite fast (although I am feeling the need to upgrade the RAM), and it can cope with quite a lot going on at the same time, I often have music playing, a few tabs open, and so on and it manages perfectly. It's actually faster than my desktop (but my desktop is very old!). The keyboard is great too, I honestly haven't noticed any difference from a normal keyboard when touch typing, only slightly with the number keys (as expected due to it's small size, they don't have the number panel on the right hand side, just the number keys below the function keys), but that's really not a big deal at all. Generally, the 10.2inch screen doesn't feel restrictive at all, the only time it frustrates me is (ironically, as this is one of the main reasons I bought it) when I try to use it on my work site (an internet music site). As there's so much stuff displayed on that page, top and bottom, I often accidently click on a link when I'm just trying to scroll down or up, and that gets tiresome after a while (I have also noticed a little lag time if there is too much graphic on a site, but generally there isn't any).
Which leads me to my next fault of this sammy: the touchpad is pretty useless if you actually need to actively use it. It jumps, freezes, and can get pretty hard to control. I am going to have to invest in a lap top mouse, as it was kinda driving me mad last night when I was trying to do some work and it made the task far longer and harder than it needed to be.
But overall, I'm pretty happy with it. I'm typing this review on it now and it's doing the job like a dream. As I'm very petite it's the perfect size (a regular laptop is way too bulky for me), and I can balance it on my lap, legs, anywhere easily and comfortably. Haven't taken it out yet, but I reckon once I buy a good shock resistant sleeve for it (the one it comes with is pretty rubbish, won't protect it from anything) it will be easy and problem free to do.
P.S. The speakers are quiet, but that is due to the settings the laptop arrives in. You can change this easily. Go into 'control panel', then 'sound, speech, and audio devices', 'Realtek HD sound effect manager'. Once in there uncross the 'karaoke' box, and make sure it's at 0. Then turn all the equalizers up to max. You can also change the environment to 'padded room', this may help. Generally have a play around with the sound in "sound, speech, and audio devices", make sure the speaker on both sides are at 50 (or equal, there have been a few reported that said one speaker was at 0, and the nother at max when it arrived). But the sound problem should be easy to sort out once you know where to look.
Hope this helps!!

Truely portable pink with serious power, 23 April 2009
This review is from: Samsung NC10 10.2-inch Netbook, Atom N270, 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM, 160GB HDD, Windows XP Home, Pink (Electronics)
I bought this little gadget as a gift for a hard working daughter who travels a lot and wants to be a writer. Her old laptop was in danger from hefty use and being carried everywhere she went at risk to neck and back and arms. Here was the ideal size keyboard for fingers that are used to typing at speed, and the screen seems larger than most notebooks and is bright and clear. The weight is a joy and the colour is fun- we thought about traditional black but she wanted a white keyboard so that she can sit in dingy coffee bars and work on the move. White looked dangerously stealable- pink looks like a toy for girls- it could be a makeup palette for that matter, but this is no toy- this is a powerful fast tool- internet access was a dream to set up and programmes she needed easy to install. The powerful long lasting battery is great- ideal for working away from home, and best of all it slips into a handbag type bag easily in its little protective cover. I can see a request for an external slim dvd drive eventually. I seriously do not need a laptop or notebook myself, where a student is concerned this is the work tool that they require to travel between university and bedroom and home for the holidays- sufficient usb ports- almost a full size keyboard and nice clear screen, a great processor and enough ram to run windows xp and good internet connection from anywhere. A friend has one in black running ubuntu as an operating system. We stick to the operating system we have been using for years, windows xp.
