Product Description

Double bill of British crime dramas. 'The Painted Smile' (1962) sees young student Mark (Peter Reynolds) wrongly accused of murder. He is lured back to an apartment by con-artist Jo (Liz Fraser), only to find her boyfriend brutally murdered on the floor. Jo convinces Mark to help her dispose of the body which leads to him being arrested for the man's murder. 'Rag Doll' (1958) tells the story of a young, attractive 17-year-old girl named Carol (Christine Gregg) who is desperate to leave her impoverished life working at her father's diner. She flees to London where she meets and falls in love with a handsome rocker (Jess Conrad). They soon marry but find themselves in a lot of trouble after their involvement in a robbery which goes horribly wrong.

Director Lance Comfort was an experienced feature film director before moving to the production and direction of B pictures. The two on offer here are gems in their own way. Firstly, you get both established players as well as up and coming stars. Secondly, you get good location filming and finally stories with a bit of a punch.
Liz Fraser manages to get young Tony Wickert into trouble in The Painted Smile.
Jess Conrad, who looked even younger then, manages to get Christina Gregg's character Carol pregnant and himself shot dead!
Running through both films are the morality issues of the day and Kenneth Griffith is a nasty piece of work in both films, brilliant.
The 1960s music is a plus and Craig Douglas sings the title song on Painted Smile and Jess Conrad, well he's just Jess.
Both films will also be of great interest to collectors of Mancunian Films as the producer on both is Tom Blakeley. Good quality prints make this a welcome addition.

An interesting coupling for fans of the talented, ubiquitous Kenneth Griffith; in "The Painted Smile" he is a ruthless gangster, in "Rag doll," he is a kindly, though slightly scheming, philanthropist.

Rag Doll is the nickname given in earlier youth to the attractive seventeen year Carol (Christina Gregg). Carol flees her foster home where she has only a drunken foster father, roadside café owner (Patrick Magee), to care for her. She hitches a lift to London close to Christmas and finds herself being befriended by "Auntie" (Hermione Baddeley) who works for café/club owner Griffith.

Gregg falls for a young would-be pop idle (Jess Conrad), much to the annoyance and distress of both Griffith and Baddeley. She becomes pregnant and in a desperate attempt to get his hands on some cash, Conrad engineers a hotchpotch raid on the home of Griffith with disastrous results.

Gregg plays possibly one of her finest roles here. It is a sad tale and one not far from an actuality in those times as I can vouch from the work I did when I lived in London throughout the sixties.

"The Painted Smile" is less satisfactory in some ways, the plot being somewhat scrappy and lacking in focus: for example, how exactly were Liz Fraser and Peter Reynolds involved with Griffith that drove the latter to murder?

Good sound and picture quality.

Hi! Sorry for the delay, YES I was well pleased with this DVD I had been trying to get hold of it for sometime and I work at the CINEMA MUSEUM as a volunteer so the second film was with Jess Conrad who we had as a Guest interview.

Many thanks, Graham
