This is beautiful music, and recorded beautifully too, but beware not to raise your expectations to the level of intensity and dramatism of J S Bach's passions. Neither has this much of the tearful beauty of, among others', Pergolesi's Stabat Mater. Despite being a contemporary of J S Bach, the music somehow feels more like having a Schutzian quality in that despite having some beautiful arias the music generally does not precede the narration so much that appeals to us 21st century listeners. Not unusually for period ensembles there is an ascetic quality to the orchestra's thin sonority, which at times to say the least does not seem to help. The booklet mentions that there are some 1400 surviving works in Telemann's vocal output, rendering it unlikely to have a complete recorded set of these works in the near future. In this context this focused survey of a particular part of his repertoire is selected well enough to cast more light on a theme in Telemann's music that usually inspires composers to create some of their best works: a welcome addition to Accademia Daniel's previous surveys of Telemann's vocal works.
