Synopsis

College student Casey Beldon (Odette Yustman, CLOVERFIELD) begins having dreams about a spooky little boy with bright blue eyes. She thinks nothing of it as first, but when the image becomes a recurring motif and the boy she babysits for hits her in the face and tells her 'Jumby wants to be born now', she begins to get frightened. After learning that she had a twin brother who died in utero, she finds a photo of her late mother with the same ghostly child looming in the background. A newspaper clipping then leads Casey to visit an elderly Holocaust survivor (Jane Alexander) in a nursing home. The woman clues her in to a dark family secret extending back to WWII, which prompts her to employ the services of Rabbi Sendak (Gary Oldman), whose scepticism about evil spirits is vanquished when he sees what he is up against.

3.0 out of 5 stars Chilling, moody, alternative horror film, 19 April 2009
By P. Jackson "oh yeah" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)

Of course this film is going to get lots of bad reviews- that's to be expected. I gave The Unborn 3 stars on the basis that modern American horror cinema has been overrun by blood-and-guts, therefore admired the fact that director David Goyer chose to keep things creepy with minimal gore, fantastic cinematography and a decent story (of which is well explored in KM's review).

It's not obvious that The Unborn was made on a rather small budget; the special effects were successfully stylish and creepy and the acting on the whole was very good. Also, thanks to an unusual musical score, the film manages to be largely atmospheric and maintain a sense of tension that we see all-too-rarely in contemporary American horror.

My girlfriend and I went to see this at the cinema and it was clear that everybody in the screening was having a great time. It was a joy to see a good old-fashioned ghost story being heavily enjoyed by today's audiences. Hopefully horror will continue returning to its roots and we'll be treated to some more original films in the vain of the Spanish or the Italian.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible, 6 April 2009
By KM (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
`The Unborn' stars Odette Yustman (who you may recognise from Cloverfield) stars as Casey, a woman who recently has been having nightmares and keeps seeing the ghost of a little boy. After looking into her family's background Casey finds out that the family has been haunted by this ghost for years.

After seeing the trailer a while back I was expecting a scary and exciting supernatural thriller, what we have here though is a dull, predictable and just plain rubbish horror. Some (most) of the scenes were just ridiculous to the extent that they were actually humorous. The acting, plot, direction, script and special effects were all terrible. When Gary Oldman made an appearance I was so surprised he would stoop so low into being in a dreadful film like this.

There's not really anything positive I can say about this film unfortunately, so unless gloves lying in the middle of the road or dogs with their heads upside down or little kids hiding behind the bathroom mirror scare you, I'd strongly recommend avoiding this film and watching something else.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just Wasn't Scary., 29 Jun 2009
By Ms. J. F. Gilby "Film Lover" (bexhill, uk) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After seeing the trailer of the Unborn, it had much promise to be a really scary movie with heads turned the other way and a ghostly looking boy with horrifying eyes. So I rented it out and watched it last night to be totally not comfortable of what I was seeing, it just wasn't scary that I first thought. Basic plot of a young girl who is haunted by a young boy who is her dead twin brother, he wants to be born and she has to fight against this evil. I couldn't believe of the known names like Gary Oldman and Idris Elba being in this, their roles are so small it's like it isn't worth them being in it. The lead girl couldn't act though her boyfriend in the film was pretty hot, they didn't pull my strings to feel sorry for them. Apart from jumping once and seeing a few shocking images, it's not a horror film really and it's a massive disappointment as I was looking forward to seeing this. When it starts, there is no names or the main title appearing on the screen. Even the film just ends with no meaning at all, seems like a waste of a hour and twenty five minutes of anyone's time. Not recommended for the easily bored or horror fans.
