Synopsis

'The Two Johns', Bird and Fortune, present this collection of satirical comedy sketches and skits. Pauline McLynn and Frances Barber join them around the dinner table to discuss the topical issues of the day and, more importantly, how they affect the middle-class. Wry humour, astute political observations and biting satire, all washed down with a nice Merlot.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Comedy, But Not Easy To Take In One Sitting, 26 Sep 2009
By DL Productions UK (Merseyside, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)
I really like the sketches in Bremner, Bird and Fortune, so I thought I would check these out. Here you get nearly 3 hours of John Bird and John Fortune doing their interview sketches, and the dinner parties they do with two comediennes. These all come from the last ten years of the show and are funny; the way they mock middle class people is just hilarious; and the interviews are very funny and mock the government to no end. Their comedy often gives a message that these people are disillusional about what's going on in society and have no idea what every day people do.

My favourite includes the dogs where Bird and Fortune dress up as dogs for the interview, and the Admiral is funny too. The dinner parties are all very funny so it's hard to find the best.

The only problem with this DVD is it's too long for one sitting, the comedy is very similar so you'll need to cut it up into pieces (not literally!) and watch it on a few nights. I'm not saying the comedy isn't good, it's just if you watch it at once you soon get fed up of the style, remember Bird and Fortune did these one a week, so they were not meant to be digested in one foul swoop.

There are no extras on this, but there are English subtitles, otherwise this is pretty much what you see is what you get. Shame there were no Bremner sketches in the extras, but this is just a Bird and Fortune affair.

This DVD will be good for future viewing though, and will have a lot of come back to appeal, as it's got historic value and it's very funny. Not sure how I will feel about it in ten years time, but I think I will still enjoy it.

Worth a rent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Divine comedy, 7 Sep 2009
By Sarah Fellingham (Suffolk, UK) - See all my reviews
Bliss, just bliss. I've been hoping for ages that they'd release the Two Johns dialogues on DVD and to have all those dinner parties makes this my comedy release of the year. I don't think I've ever laughed out loud so often at any comedy DVD. The fact that these brilliant sketches happen also to constitute a social history of our times beyond the dreams of socal historians is just a bonus.
