A fracas in a bowling alley leads to some woman being gang raped. The next evening, the same group of pond life, attend an after hours bowling fixture, only to be snuffed out, one by one, by a mysterious killer. Could it have anything to do with the previous evening's events? All will be revealed I'm sure...

Well I read the reviews here on Amazon and was really interested in having a gander at this one. Nearly every review singing the film's praises, as though it were some shining red lit beacon of modern, hardcore slasher horror and sleaze. Ooo I thought, that sounds like it might be okay, partial as I am to a bit of the old sex and violence tainting my movies, gonna have to give that one a go....

Oh dear, oh dear...... All I can say now, is that I'm glad I didn't spend anything on this, other than the petrol it required to ride over and collect it from a friend, followed by the investment of time it took to watch this foul streak of discharge!

Of course with it being a low budget slasher flick, unashamedly attempting to hark back to the sub~genre's early 80s glory days, one can kind of, maybe, forgive it the pitiful acting on display, or the endless stream of irritating characters. Hell, even it's unsubtle, sheer vulgarity and repugnant motifs..
Yes, I could forgive it all that, if we were dealing with a classic example, of a throwback from the genre. Or for that matter, even an okay example, of a throwback from the genre, providing that it had other merits!!
However, sadly, this film is neither a classic throwback example to any genre, and nor does it contain any notable merits!

The film's height of character interaction and 'hilarity', seeming to revolve exclusively around a bunch of grotty little teenagers (twenty somethings or older!

This is one of the most awesome modern 80's style grindhouse movies ever made, this film has got everything!!! A cool story set after hours at a bowling alley, a really mixed insane cast of characters, there is buckets of blood and explicit gore scenes that are totally uncut and in your face, the practical effects are top notch for a low budget film, theres plenty of sex and nudity too, the acting is cheesy and over the top but it all adds to the charm, these filmmakers have really set out to make something special and indeed they did, a must, must see for any fan of the genre.

Exploitation and extreme horror fans should like this. Gutterballs is a fine piece of nasty entertainment and is a good deal nastier and better than the director's previous film Live Feed and more accomplished though not without the odd little flaw. Its a rape revenge bowling slasher, where an incredibly heinous act early on leads to death and mayhem at a night time bowling competition. The characters are pretty obnoxious, though perhaps not quite as toxic as the characters in Live Feed. The villain of the piece, Steve is an unbelievably over-the-top scumbag, played with verve by Alastair Gamble who should get some credit for playing surely one of the most noxious people ever to feature in a horror film. The film's greatness however is the gore and violent death scenes, you get a shocking death scene that I like to call the "69 suffocation" to the "split penis slice" death scene, someones head gets bashed in with a bowling pin, and another person gets his head completely blown off by a shotgun (my favorite scene) the censors probably had a field day with this film. Also, all of the bouncing breasts, outrageous, lingering gore and the insane amount of profanity will probably offend a few people out there especially with that lengthy and disturbing gang rape scene. There's not a lot of plot to Gutterballs, but rather it serves as a homage to 80's slashers and Italian giallo films whose killer wears black gloves, and extreme, over-the-top kill scenes of gore and sex. The 80's soundtrack that Ryan Nicholson was able to get for the film really helps drive home the early 80's vibe that the movie has, not to mention the great atmosphere of the bowling alley.Read more ›

This review may contain Spoilers. For fans of the revenge slasher movie this gore-fest is a must-see. Director Bryan Nicholson was influenced by the slasher movies of the eighties and with glitterballs, disco lighting and clothes fashioned eighties style, the film takes on an eighties feel. The action is set in motion after a particularly graphic rape scene when two teams compete in a late-night bowling competition. Gradually, the teams are whittled down in a series of set-piece murders.

The characters all seem to be obnoxious in their own way and these characteristics become the manner of their deaths - death by irony if you will. All the characters and death scenes are way over the top and in fact are almost cartoon-like. Death by 69 and one victim having the smile wiped of his face are classics. Watch the tranny get his come-uppance and wince. No amount of blood and guts and gore were spared in the making of this film. The special effects are awesome and gore fans will have nothing to complain about after watching this. No slasher film would be complete without a bit of nudity and this one is no exception. With blood and breasts in the mix there seems no chance that this will ever get a BBFC pass so watch this in its uncut form.

This is a Region 1 DVD and so you will need a multi-region player to watch it. The extras on the DVD include a making-of feature which I found a bit disappointing because there was not enough time devoted to the creating of the special effects. That though is a minor quibble. This film is not for the squeamish but if you are a gore fan then grab this one.
