Product Description

1972 Hong Kong action kung fu movie produced by the Shaw Brothers. Regarded by many as the film that founded the kung fu genre, the story centres around the rivalry between two schools of the martial arts. Apart from the action scenes, the film also reveals some of the philosophy of kung fu as a young trainee fights his way from novice to 'Master of the Iron Fist'.

Synopsis

From Hong Kong’s Shaw Brothers, the founding fathers of kung fu film, comes the groundbreaking cult movie King Boxer. Required viewing for cinephiles and martial arts fans alike, King Boxer took world audiences by storm with the tale of a young martial artist who battles his way into a national tournament, in the name of love, honour and revenge. His journey from young fighter in training to master of the Iron Fist delves deep into mythic kung fu lore and is laced with explosive action and dazzling fight sequences.

I have to say after watching this movie I was amazed by how good it was. Lo Lieh (who usually plays villians) gives a great performance, proberly his best in my opinion. The action is frequent and very brutal compared to the films of say Jet Li and Bruce Lee, alot of blood and bruises!

Theres also a good music score which was later reused in Kill Bill.

This is a must see, martial arts fans must buy this!

"King Boxer" aka "Five Fingers of Death" made in 1972 was probably the first Kung Fu film I saw (either that or "Fists of Fury") and even now almost 40 years on still stands the test of time. Great art direction and use of light and gels which was predominant in all Shaw Bros films of that era whereby they were virtually entirely studio bound - that's not a criticism as it really works. The photographic compositions look great in 2.35:1 and are carefully designed even though the focus pulling leaves something to be desired from time to time!

My biggest thumbs up here is one of those rare Quentin Tarantino commentaries - you know - the sort he ONLY does for 'other' peoples films (check out the "Hostel" films and "From Dusk Till Dawn" hysterical!) - and a joy they are!! QT really knows his stuff and the enthusiasm he explodes with on the talk track is infectious - far more entertaining than the normal dry academic discussions that attach themselves to these films. I nearly split my sides at times with his wonderful asides and observations - especially about all the 'stolen' music cues on the soundtrack such as "Ironsides" etc - though QT did miss the "Diamonds are Forever" cues that constantly pop up too.

All up an excellent film, transfer and commentary. ENJOY :)

This cult classic from the legendary Shaw Brothers studio is a must have for any martial arts afficionado . King Boxer was a smash hit
which took world audiences by storm and made a star out of martial arts legend Lo Lieh . The tale of a young martial artist who battles
his way into a national tournament , in the name of love , honour and revenge . His journey from young fighter in training to master of
the Iron Fist technique delves deep into mythic kung fu lore and is laced with explosive action and dazzling fight sequences and is also remembered for that soundtrack from Ironside .

After all the hysteria and Bruce Lee (etc) mania,King Boxer remains the first and my favourite kung fu movie I ever watched.
This was as I remember ,the 1st Kung Fu movie to be shown in a mainstream cinema in the U.K.at the Warner,Leicester Square.
We had never seen anything like this and it was amazing seeing what these people did without weapons.
Without reminding viewers about everything that has come and gone since,I can only add that this is still my
first and one of only a handful of Kung Fu movies that I have ever bought.

After watching Prodigal Son and Warriors Two, along with Ip Man 1 and 2 and The Legend Is Born, I was expecting alot from this as I had continuously heard about it.

It is a cool film but I think my expectations were just a little high but I could see how in it's day it would have been an instant classic.

But was followed by films like the first two I mentioned and The 36th Chamber of Shaolin.
