Product Description

Product Description

Russia's re-emergence on the world stage in recent months is reminiscent of the glory days of the Soviet Union. But, with democratic opposition in the country being systematically crushed, does Valdimir Putin's ultra-authoritarian leadership have more in common with his communist predecessors than previously thought?

This film is an investigative documentary covering 30 years in the history of Russia through the personal history of Vladimir Putin: a man who has single-mindedly played all the rules of the game to reach the throne of power. It covers all the major events and aspects of the "Putin system" up to the present day

The best review which "Putin System" got did not come from critics or viewers. It came from Russia, which had such a hysterical reaction to the film that there could no longer be any doubt that it was both hard-hitting and true. In Latvia, where I live, the government ham-handedly tried to censor a showing of the film on state television, with the chairman of the National Radio and Television Council saying that it should not be shown because Russia was having a parliamentary election a few days later -- as if that should make a difference in a completely different country. Vladimir Putin is a modern-day czar, there is no two ways about it, and "Putin System" beautifully traces the way in which he got where he is now. He was underestimated by many, his relationship with the KGB and its successor agency was what pushed him up, up and up, and today we have Russia in Putin's image -- nothing illustrates this better than the fact that Russia today occupies a swathe of the independent Republic of Georgia. The Soviet Union didn't disappear. Putin simply refashioned it. Thank you to the producers of "Putin System" -- they know of what they speak.
