Synopsis

Based on the hit Japanese novel SHIMOTSUMA STORY by Novala Takemoto, KAMIKAZE GIRLS is a charming, unique, and very funny film. Pop star Kyoko Fukada stars as Momoko, a 17-year-old girl so obsessed with everything rococo that she wears old-fashioned frilly white clothing and carries a parasol. After her mother (Ryoko Shinohara) leaves and her would-be yakuza father (Hiroyuki Miyasako) gets kicked out of the big city for selling the wrong kind of designer knock-offs, Momoko and her dad move to the country, living with Momoko's somewhat offbeat grandmother (Kirin Kiki). Desperate for money, Momoko starts selling the remainder of her father's counterfeit clothing, but her only customer is a tough-talking young biker chick, Ichigo (Anna Tsuchiya), who belongs to an all-girl gang. Against all probability, the two very different teenagers become best friends, even though neither will admit it. And when Ichigo faces serious danger, Momoko must decide whether she can save the day. Writer-director Tetsuya Nakashima infuses the delightful KAMIKAZE GIRLS with fast-paced scenes, goofy flashbacks, playful sets, bright colors, and an endearing and infectious sense of fun in every shot.

A lovely tale of two weird and independent girls who find friendship in each other. Very cute and very funny - the kind of film i can watch over and over and over... i've only had it for 2 days and i've watched in 3 times! and twice were with a flatmate who is now addicted to it! truely wonderful and so sweet :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A sort of "Death Proof" from Japan, 1 Mar 2009
This is a delight of a film. It has all the fun that a Tarantino's Death Proof has, without possibly the more gruesome aspects. Just like in Death Proof, you get a storyline about as pointless as you can get. You get engine roars mixed with cool music tracks, albeit these engines are from motor scooter that do about 20 mph at full speed haw haw haw! You get the pretty girls, the exuberant clothes, the witty dialogs, and a very crafty camera/photo work. Highly recommended.

This film is an adaptation of the book 'Kamikaze Girls'. (Shimotsuma Monogatari in Japanese)
There are some scenes in the film that aren't in the book, and things are in a slightly different order but besides this, it does the book justice ^^ I would recommend you read the book before seeing the film though ^^.

If you are looking for a fun Japanese film, I can't recommend Kamikaze Girls highly enough, it will make you laugh all the way through, the characters are well developed and mostly true to the book. It would help to have some prior knowledge of Japanese pop culture to fully understand some of the scenes ^^

All in all, this film would be a wondorous addition to anybody's film collection.
