Travolta/Cage/Allen ~ Face/Off

I don't know why, but part of me finds these 1990s action films so much more entertaining than the modern versions. Yes, we now have fancy CGI effects and brilliantly crisp visuals, but there was something more soulful about the live stunts in a film like Face/Off. Knowing that every time a boat crashes into a ball of flames, or someone smashes head first through a window, it actually happened in reality with a stuntman just makes everything more fun.

Now despite this bias, I'll admit that the plot is completely implausible. Even if you ignore the science behind doing face transplants like this (which are now possible, but not in the way portrayed) the idea that they would even attempt it, or that Nicolas Cage could somehow escape and kill everyone who knew about it, is pretty ridiculous.

Likewise I'll accept that John Woo's love of slow motion shots of people shooting guns while birds flutter around in the background gets a bit silly (see Mission Impossible 2 for another example). Indeed Nicolas Cage and John Travolta, despite being a master criminal and a supercop, have arguably the worst shooting accuracy in the history of film. They both unload a couple of thousand rounds of ammunition at each other in countless setpieces and yet fail to even hit the target once (John Travolta's teenage daughter seems to be the best shot).

All of this is irrelevant, though. The point is that it's a fun situation and if you disengage the cynical part of your brain for an hour and a half it's immensely entertaining. Unfortunately at some point over the last 15 years Hollywood became completely dominated by CGI reboots of old franchises, adaptations of bestselling novels, and ensemble cast cash-ins. As a result, the sheer unfettered silliness of a film like Face/Off seems to be something of a dying art. It's by no means a work of genius, but for sheer entertainment/nostalgia value it deserves 5 stars.

region free US edition, This is one of my favourite movies and one of the best action flicks, the main reason I purchased this version is its fully uncut, so you get to see the additional 7 seconds that have been cut on UK version, plus the UK version is bare bones so you don't get any of the special features, its good to see some US region free blu-rays available on Amazon UK and at a good price.

This film I honestly thought was the best action thriller I have ever seen, with amazing gun fights, excellent stunts and a brilliant plot. John Travalta is Sean Archer, a top FBI Agent who was just brought to justice the killer of his young son, Castor Troy. But there is a complication. Although his family can settle down and live in peace, there is a bomb planted somewhere in LA but only Castor and his buddies know where. To solve this, Archer agrees to a ridiculous operation to have his face swapped with Castor's (who is in a coma), his voice and his hair aswell. As Archer goes undercover as Castor in a high-force prison, he finds out information about the whereabouts of the bomb. But then the real Castor wakes out of his coma and burns all the documents that prove the face-swap ever happened and kills all the people who know about it. Sean soon realises that he is stuck in jail, whilst Castor lives his life. As further complications ensue, the action and stunts of John Woo get better and better. Both Nicholas Cage and John Travolta have to act each other's characters and do it very well when they must. This film is absolutely brilliant. BUY IT NOW!!!

Too bad that this film, despite some very intelligent ideas and great scenes, does not seem to be consistent enough to be judge entirely good, otherwise I would have given it at least four stars.
The idea of the contraddiction and the existential short circuit produced by the exchange of personalities is developed very well, and the two actors are so good to imitate one another's tic, expressions, body language to convey that.
This is a narrative idea that brilliatnly and dramatically suggest how good and bad are exchangeable and totally relative sometimes, and there is no room for judgement and absolute justice to decide who is right and who is wrong.
There are also some impressive scenes, where John Woo shows his talent and art (the spectacular gunfight with the music of "Over the Rainbow").
But still the Director shows some flawes, that, to me, are not due to Studios and Production influence on him, but because he is a little kitsch and rough himself (enough with slow motion, doves, pointless camera movements, etc...) And you can tell it also by some ridiculous moments whee Nicolas Cage confirm to be Nicolas Cage (no matter of the "face exchange") and overacts as usual. The blu ray is very good anyway and the film is enjoyable and not stupid

Do not buy this BD from UK!

Every other country has teh full cut movie, except this one where the switchblade scenes have been removed.
Its only a few seconds but done very poorly and easily seen.
I havent watched the movie in ten years yet I noticed it straight away.

PQ and AQ is great otherwise, dunno why its censored in UK.

Face/Off today is cheesy. Not that this is bad because it the over the top shoot outs, the hilarious one liners and a plot so bizarre that it instantly memorable. It one of those of those films which grabs you at the very start and throws you in with the characters , not letting go until the very ending . Something you expect for a action film.

Travolta and Cage are exceptional. You won't forget these two rivalry for years to come after watching them both. The lines they are given can, at times, be cringe-worthy but you won't act negatively towards them as they fit in perfectly with the rest of the film.

Woo delivers the shootouts with dedication and perfection. He never over does the slow-mo and he adds plenty of eye candy. Every shootout in the film will stay crystal clear for years after viewing them.

There not many negatives to this film. If your looking for a serious story and a realistic conflict between two men, then you will most likely not enjoy face/off. However, if you love explosions, OTT characters, rolling and diving and cool one liners, then this will won't disappoint.
