3.0 out of 5 stars Kira's Choice: Ambition or Family, 16 Feb 2009
By J. Snook "Ichigo_2020 - Anime Buff" (Wales) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
After the climactic events of volume 3, death note brings closure to the first part of the story and quickly moves on to the final story arc. 7 years pass and Light Yagami is closer than ever to achieving his ambition of creating a perfect, crime free world in which he would rule. As usual there is some nice plot progression and twists as well as the addition of 2 new chracters, Mello and Near, who have a connection to the detective L and both want to track down and kill Kira. Little is revealed about these new arrivals in these 4 episodes but there is more than enough intrigue to keep you hooked. What we do know is that even though they share the same goals, they go about it in very different ways. In these episodes, Light is faced with some brand new challenges and oppositions as well as some very tough decisions to make when his sister is kidnapped and the Death Note is stolen.

While this volume of Death Note is enjoyable, it is evident that the series has lost some of it's original sparkle. This collection of episodes represent the weaker chapters of the original manga and this becomes very evident at times as the plot is sometimes found dragging it's feet in parts. And with a certain character killed off at this point, some of the shows spark has faded. That's not to say this volume is awful, but there is definetly a dip in quality. In my opinion, this volume is merely a build up of things to come as it bridges to the two story arcs. If this is the case then the 5th and final volume should be something special.
This disc contains a further 4 episodes (25 - 28) of the series as well as an audio commentary for the memorable episode 25 and some cast and crew interviews along with the usual manga trailers of Bleach, Naruto, Mar etc.
The music remains very good with the J-rock band 'Maximum the hormone' providing the excellent opening and ending theme songs, and as usual the animation is spot on with some nice use of colour tones to create a dark and gothic feel to the show.

If you're new to the series then you should definetly pick up the first volume and start from there. These later episodes in the show do have some flaws but overall, death note is a fantastic anime series that will be enjoyed by many people; anime fan or not. Ever since volume 1 was released all the way back in April last year, each following volume has seen the pace decrease ever so slightly and Volume 4 is definetly the weakest yet so lets hope that volume 5 breaks the pattern and ends this great series on a high note.

4.0 out of 5 stars Episodes are amazing (just like the book) however only 4 episodes on this volume, 23 Jun 2009
O.K so if anyone has read the actual books, and have also watched the animé, you will know that they are EXACTLY the same, except obviously the book doesn't have moving pictures and sounds.

If you already have Volumes 1 - 3, then there is no point in not getting this.

The problem with this volume is it only has 1 DVD and it only has 4 Episodes (25, 26, 27 & 28), which is abit confusing why they did this as the last 3 volumes had 2 disks and 9 episodes for each volume.

3.0 out of 5 stars Death note heading for a burial?, 19 Mar 2009
The first couple of series of Death note had left me desperately waiting for the next. I always pre-bought the new seasons because I couldn't wait anymore. The brilliant characters and plot twists ingeniously crafted kept you on the edge of your seat, white knuckled and wide eyed.

I am sorry to say that Death Note is losing its magic recently though. This season has the least episodes of all the previous ones and even though you will not be short on plot twists with this one you might find that overall it's starting to look like the show producers are striving to keep Death Note alive just for the sake of sales figures. The plot's lost its grip on me, the characters have gone stale and now I'm wondering if I even care about the next volume to come out. That's what happens when a show becomes too popular I guess..
