Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
As with many other Anime series; Claymore introduces itself by spoonfeeding you the basics so that after the first few moments you understand how villages are being ravaged by human eating shaft-shifting monsters called Yomas, and that Yoma-Human hybrids called Claymores are hired to hunt them down.

In one such village a young man called Raki whose family has become Yoma food befriends the Clare, the contracted Claymore. After being unceremoniously thrown out of his village he and Clare become companions and they set out together while she carries out her work. Raki's questions to the Claymore help us to understand more about her, but for every answer there seems to be further mystery. She obviously isn't used to company and there are always hints to a great inner sadness. She has flashbacks to a terrible event in her past which led her to choose the path of a Claymore.

The series plods along and seems almost formulaic; monsters appear, things get a bit hairy (often literally) but at the last minute there's a gush of blood to end a gory battle leaving our two protagonists victorious. The underlying circumstances concerning Clare drive the first volume though, she's a compelling character - having to live with the stigma of being half monster and dealing with the constant fear and suspicions of those she encounters. You feel that the series has something good to offer and the final episode takes you by surprise when it deviates from the established story of the first four episodes to bring you an action packed but tragic tale of a different Claymore and a young girl who is something of a tragic figure. This new plotline is set at some point in the past.

When the first volume ends you are left wanting more, and the second volume cements the two different timelines together to fuse together a solid character in Clare. We get her history and a pretty epic one it is, you get a true feeling of how her background has moulded her, and more importantly - we care about what happens to her.

In a nutshell: What initially seems like a typical slash `em up delves under the surface to develop a solid character base who drive these ten episodes through a story which takes place across two timelines. The duality gives the series a history which allows you to get into the head of lead-girl Clare. I've seen a few anime series recently which have been a disappointment - a good concept struggled to carry a whole series, but Claymore does not suffer from that problem. After watching this I will be watching the subsequent volumes - I want to know how this ends.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Programme (What's this?)
This is top rate anime. It will quite simply blow you away. The central character is Clare, a Claymore who is half-woman, half-monster. She uses the half-monster side to search out the Yoma who feed on human flesh, having first disguised themselves as human.
As with all the best anime its a slow burner with the characters being slowly teased out rather than presented immediately. It all takes place as a natural part of the various adventures Clare has. In the second episode, for instance, we learn that the Claymore are the products of unknown experiments carried out on the young girls that robs them of half of their humanity.
Any fan of anime has to watch this, but more to the point anyone who wonders what the fuss is all about will find out in no uncertain terms.
