Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

This is not your average Wii game. Not only is it a rare 18-rated title for the console, but it's one of the most violent video games on any system. If you've the stomach for it though it's been created by some of gaming's most talented developers, including the producer of Viewtiful Joe and Okami.

Jack is not the shy retiring sort of video game anti-hero
Man darts is one of the more ridiculous mini-games
Giant-sized bosses are one of the game's other specialities
There's never been a game that looks anything like this before

Although the level of violence is extreme it's not in the slightest bit realistic or serious, as lead character Jack competes in an ultraviolent television show called Death Watch. The whole game is portrayed in a black & white comic book style, with the only other colour present being the red of split blood.

Beyond all the controversy though lies a well-honed action game, with Jack able to use almost anything in the environment as a weapon - whether it's tied down or not. If you want more out of the Wii than just another mini-game collection, this could be the game for you.

Key Features
  • Family values: The most violent game ever made for the Wii, from one of the heads of the legendary Clover Studio - creators of Okami and God Hand.
  • Red all over: Unique graphical style is influenced by Frank Miller's Sin City, with the whole game portrayed solely in black, white and… red.
  • Farewell to arms: Main character Jack has a chainsaw for an arm and he's not afraid to use it, insome of the most visceral melee combat ever seen.
  • (E)motion control: Context-sensitive controls are easy to learn but provide plenty of nuance as you learn to use your environment and your enemy's tactics to your advantage.
  • Black & red: Bizarre mini-games and challenges, including the gruesome "death press" and the over-the-top "man darts" - involving a baseball bat and a giant dart board.
About the Developer: Platinum Games
Founded by the key members of Capcom's Clover Studio, Platinum Games has the most star-studded line-up of any independent Japanese developer - including the creators of Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe and Okami. Their first games include MadWorld and Bayonetta.

Product Description

Set in a stylish, monochromatic black and white world, Madworld is a game that mixes the look of graphic novels with fully realised, next-gen environments.

And Varrigan City is where the game takes place. It's a city that has been seized by terrorists and turned into their own sporting arena; where "kill or be killed" is the only rule. Welcome to Death Watch.... As players battle enemies they must master the use of various weapons and items found within their environment, such as a chainsaws and street signs, and compete in minigames designed to push the players over the edge. With its irreverent humor and over-the-top violence Madworld delivers a visceral gaming experience that will be an instant classic on the Wii.

  • Killer looks: Unique and stunning black and white stylised graphics based upon comic book graphic novels
  • Exciting, instinctual gameplay: Fast, visceral, arcade-style gameplay with brutal finishing moves delivered by the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.
  • Over-the-top violence: Vast array of murderous moves, exaggerated characters and monstrous bosses presented in an irreverent style.
  • Multiplayer minigames: Variety of Wii party-games presented with an ultra-violent twist that can be played hotseat against friends.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant and sooo violent!, 30 Mar 2009

(TOP 100 REVIEWER)
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
I've been waiting for `MadWorld' to come out for what feels like absolutely ages and after spending a couple of hours over the past few nights playing it, I am not disappointed at all. This is the second "videogame nasty" to come from Sega this month on the Nintendo Wii and makes House of the Dead: Overkill look like a teddy bear's picnic in comparison as this game is brutal! You play Jack, a contender in a TV show called Death Watch where you are locked into various parts of a city and must kill everyone to be number 1 in the competition - it's like The Running Man meets Sin City meets Streets of Rage!

One of the things that is particularly fascinating about this game is the graphics - this game is visually stunning and easily the best looking game on the Wii by a long shot. Using black and white comic book style visuals with just red blood and the occasional yellow bit of writing for the effects, this game makes you feel like you are actually playing a comic! I think even if I was playing this on the PS3 or Xbox 360 I would still be impressed with the graphics on this one! This game has really pushed the Wii to its limits and this looks great!

Another thing that is very impressive is the controls - Sega have made full use of the Wii's innovate control system and everything works smoothly and is very responsive. It isn't at all difficult to master the moves and is extremely user-friendly and most importantly - great fun.

The commentary from the two presenters is absolutely hilarious and will have you quite literally shocked at some of the things that they say. Humour plays a big part in this game (like HOTD: Overkill) to lighten up the fact that this is probably the most violent game ever made. You'll be harpooning signposts through an enemy's head before throwing them onto a spike repeatedly or dunking them into a flaming oil drum and then throwing them into a dustbin with spikes on which will cut them in half! Trust me - this game has pretty much every over the top kill you can think of (including human darts!)!

As good as this is, this game isn't perfect though. The motorbike sections are fairly pointless and not as fun as I hoped they would be. The gameplay , although fun, can become a little repetitive at times, so this may be best to be played in short intervals as I have to keep its appeal, as at the end of the day, this is just a scrolling beat `em up.

If you thought that the Wii was made for little girls who want pet sims or princess dress-ups, or for middle-aged women who want to keep fit at home, you're probably right...until now! With this, HOTD: Overkill and a few other more "grown-up" games in the pipeline (such as The Conduit) the Wii is finally starting to appeal to older gamers and this is the perfect game to prove this. This is easily the best single player game on the Wii in a long time (since Mario Galaxy, Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime 3) so I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a decent and fun to play game on the Wii that just oozes style.

3.0 out of 5 stars BRAWLER OF CRAWLER: A REALISTIC REVIEW., 20 Mar 2009
Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
First up let me say I would give this a score of 3.5 not just three overall. So on with the review:
I've been playing Madworld for about 5 hours now (and I get the sneaking suspicion I already may be nearing the end) and feel that I have a reasonably good enough grasp of the mechanics and so on to give a fair and honest review of it. First off you play a tough guy called Jack (Just Jack) who has entered into the violent TV show 'Death Watch,' but as expected he has a few agendas of his own that I won't spoil for you. As far as the sotry goes it's a pretty typical ride overall all and nothing that'll blow you eyebrows off. So now that's out of the way I'll provide you with a handy pros and cons list to better help you decide if Madworld is worth your pennies or is, indeed, as 'Mad' as it thinks it is.

THE GOODNESS:
- The visuals have that 'sin city' 'comic book' cool that's so in vogue at the moment. So it's black and white with tons of red blood gushing all over the shop. For me the visuals are a good but not unbelievable - it's an interesting style that reminds me of Viewtiful Joe more than a little bit. However no matter what you think of the spectacle on display one thing is true: it masks the wii's limited graphical capabilities (for most part) in a decent, inventive manner.
- Some of the deaths are good fun and nearly all are very inventive - If death moves are your thing then you'll be in seventh heaven, big time!
- The scoring system is really cool, the entire thing is based on how much brutality you can inflict on one or multiple foes. This really makes you want to explore the levels to find even more inventive ways of causing pain and shedding blood.
- As mentioned above the levels are full of death traps and they urge exploration, but this would be nothing if the levels where badly designed. So it's a good job they're very good then isn't it.
- The controls are responsive and for most part work well and enable you to cause carnage on a massive level.
- Some decent remote gestures ala God of War. They are again well implemented and suitably chunky feeling.
- The commentators crude voice over's (which are genuinely funny at time and provided by the guy who did Bender's voice in Futurama and Marcus in Gears of War) to the soggy slaps and slashing sounds that emit from your victims. It all works very well and brings the tone of the game together nicely.
- Some fun and manic mini games that usually involve you dispatching foes in some brutal contraption to the beat of a time limit. These can also be played multiplayer which is a nice addition though not essential.
- Helpful (if a little sparse) menu and map.

THE BADNESS:
- Often achieving those big combo scores involves doing much the same thing over and over again: You stick a post through someone's head you stick a tire/barrel/bin over their heads then launch them into something spiky or grindy. There are many inventive ways to kills you foes but the game relies heavily on novelty and once you've crushed one foe under a press or thrown them in a sushi maker then you've then the novelty is gone. Although the graphics can be masked with style variety cannot.
- It's a scrolling beat `em up, nothing more, nothing less - a novel scoring system and some interesting death moves aside and all you've got is a bog standard beater. Punch, punch, splat. Now the game makers knew this and tried to add a few motorcycle bits to break up the levels but they are very basic and add nothing: in fact if they hadn't been in there it wouldn't have mattered in the slightest. The minigames/ bloodbath challenges work well and do add some small amount of variety but they are only based on what's already at hand.
- Jack is a typical character: gruff and sporting an awesome weapon...just like Kratos, Travis (from No More Heroes) and Marcus Fenix. Some people never get bored of these kind of guys and I personally see how they fit into the gaming world (and especially games like this) but they are much of a muchness.
- If the humour and style doesn't grab you you're going to hate this.
- Equally if you're over a certain age (as I am) I think the gore will give you a laugh but the novelty will wear of quite quickly and as I've said before the whole game is based on them, which brings me onto my next point nicely.
- The game is short, very short, I'm right at the end after just a morning of play so you can go back for high score purposes but as far as unlockables go it's not that kind of show I'm afraid and so all you have after score thrashing is hoping to find a few hidden death moves you haven't seen a hundred times before on your first play through - but don't hold your breath.
- All of the bosses involve you waiting till they do a certain attack then getting into a clash with them - all of them, they are obvious and not very tough at all. Some quite nice finishers for them though.
- If you die (which isn't likely) and lose all your lives on a boss or at the end of a level you'll be replaying it from the beginning of said level. This is an obvious grasp at longevity but the game isn't really tough enough to cause you many problems (although I hear there's a hard mode you can unlock after one play through - shocker! - so then this may become an issue.)

OVERALL:
A solid enough beat `em up with a few twists and turns that provide some kicks. If you're looking for massive innovation or more than just a puerile bucket of gore and cheap thrills then look elsewhere. Likewise if you're looking for value, longevity and more than just novelty then you're better off buying something else. It's a good laugh but nothing more, and some people may want something better for their 30 notes. For me it was just the mindless ride I needed after a hard weeks work - just don't expect too much.

*UPDATE*
I Stick by my score and review: after a few days of playing this and seeing all the death moves there is very little to come back to. It was a nice distraction and I would have loved and kept it if I was 15 but the novelty is gone and it's going back to the shops to trade for something more substantial. Fun while it lasted (completed it in about 6 hours and saw all of the death moves in about 8.)

5.0 out of 5 stars One for the Hardcore , 22 Mar 2009
By Levi Minett - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
After months of waiting for this game, i was not disapointed with the end product, infact it was better than expected. Firstly the gameplay is spot on, plays like fun, each level has its own weapons of destrution and its genraly alot of fun. Secondly the grahics for the game are really well put together, being in black and white, and red you can really see the detail on all the objects and items in the levels. Thirdly the controls work pretty well, there is the odd time when you have to be really quick and it sometime dosent recongise this, but so far this is only one level that its happend on. This is a must for the hardcore fans!
