Manufacturer's Description

This is not your average Wii game. Not only is it a rare 18-rated title for the console, but it's one of the most violent video games on any system. If you've the stomach for it though it's been created by some of gaming's most talented developers, including the producer of Viewtiful Joe and Okami.

Jack is not the shy retiring sort of video game anti-hero
Man darts is one of the more ridiculous mini-games
Giant-sized bosses are one of the game's other specialities
There's never been a game that looks anything like this before

Although the level of violence is extreme it's not in the slightest bit realistic or serious, as lead character Jack competes in an ultraviolent television show called Death Watch. The whole game is portrayed in a black & white comic book style, with the only other colour present being the red of split blood.

Beyond all the controversy though lies a well-honed action game, with Jack able to use almost anything in the environment as a weapon - whether it's tied down or not. If you want more out of the Wii than just another mini-game collection, this could be the game for you.

Key Features
  • Family values: The most violent game ever made for the Wii, from one of the heads of the legendary Clover Studio - creators of Okami and God Hand.
  • Red all over: Unique graphical style is influenced by Frank Miller's Sin City, with the whole game portrayed solely in black, white and… red.
  • Farewell to arms: Main character Jack has a chainsaw for an arm and he's not afraid to use it, insome of the most visceral melee combat ever seen.
  • (E)motion control: Context-sensitive controls are easy to learn but provide plenty of nuance as you learn to use your environment and your enemy's tactics to your advantage.
  • Black & red: Bizarre mini-games and challenges, including the gruesome "death press" and the over-the-top "man darts" - involving a baseball bat and a giant dart board.
About the Developer: Platinum Games
Founded by the key members of Capcom's Clover Studio, Platinum Games has the most star-studded line-up of any independent Japanese developer - including the creators of Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Viewtiful Joe and Okami. Their first games include MadWorld and Bayonetta.

I've been waiting for `MadWorld' to come out for what feels like absolutely ages and after spending a couple of hours over the past few nights playing it, I am not disappointed at all. This is the second "videogame nasty" to come from Sega this month on the Nintendo Wii and makes House of the Dead: Overkill look like a teddy bear's picnic in comparison as this game is brutal! You play Jack, a contender in a TV show called Death Watch where you are locked into various parts of a city and must kill everyone to be number 1 in the competition - it's like The Running Man meets Sin City meets Streets of Rage!

One of the things that is particularly fascinating about this game is the graphics - this game is visually stunning and easily the best looking game on the Wii by a long shot. Using black and white comic book style visuals with just red blood and the occasional yellow bit of writing for the effects, this game makes you feel like you are actually playing a comic! I think even if I was playing this on the PS3 or Xbox 360 I would still be impressed with the graphics on this one! This game has really pushed the Wii to its limits and this looks great!

Another thing that is very impressive is the controls - Sega have made full use of the Wii's innovate control system and everything works smoothly and is very responsive. It isn't at all difficult to master the moves and is extremely user-friendly and most importantly - great fun.

The commentary from the two presenters is absolutely hilarious and will have you quite literally shocked at some of the things that they say. Humour plays a big part in this game (like HOTD: Overkill) to lighten up the fact that this is probably the most violent game ever made.

An interesting title. The graphical style is superb and really adds to the presentation of the game. The game itself is very simple in its approach, enter a zone, kill bad guys in interesting ways. The more unique the kill the more points you get, get a certain amount of points and you unlock bloodbath mode where you get a small mini-game which allows you to rack up some big points. These are fresh and original ideas sure to bring a smile to your face. Hit the target amount of points and the boss is available for tackling. Kill the boss, enter a new zone. Repeat.

It's a simple premise that is well executed. I did find it a little boring and repetitive after a few hours but I must admit I was compelled to complete it. It's not a long game and can be finished in about 5 hours so I would say its perfect for a weekend rental.

Overall judgment: Extreme fun, originally desinged for a bunch of hours of madness! A first step in a new dimension of fun!
Graphics: Very original, no doubts about it. The mix of white, black and blood is sometimes a little bit tiring for your eyes though.
Sound: The real time commentary is awsome and fun (and repetitive sometimes). Sounds effects and sound tracks are outstanding as well.
Gameplay: Easy to learn, though it took me some time to get the best out of Jack Cayman. As you go ahead with your missions, it tends to get very repetitive.
Longevity: The real weak point of the game, you can blast trough it in 5 hours... and the unlockables do not add much more to that purpose.

Madworld is a fantastically fun, newspaper story generating, stylish and most of all fun piece of work. I've tried to set out some quick pros and cons as I hate trawling through paragraphs to decide on a title...

Gameplay 4/5
Fantasically fun for the first hour, then you realise its much the same mash of moves in a different sequence. Still fun enough to hold you in until you finish it a few hours later. A good, simple bloodbath. not sure if I'll paly through again tho'hence the mark off.

Controls 4/5
Easy to work out & combos are therefore simple to pull off. Suffers from the whole 'resident evil camera, where the hell am I' syndrome - easily corrected by centreing the camera, but doing it nearly all the time to see your enemy. Not much getting the instruction book out for this one.

Story & Cut scenes 3/5
They're all right, but when I played the game 'Xii' i felt it was abit lazy on the cutscenes and link sections - same story here...all fairly static cartoon ideas (but done quite well). Story definately draws on Running man and commentrary adds to the game well - crude as you like, always over the top but a good idea all around story hints and some secrets/questions to be found out from the start - but its all fairly no brainer stuff, great for pick up and play people tho'

Visuals & Sound 5/5
Wow, have Sin city sued sega yet? They don't own the rights to B/W comic effects I know, but the main characture Jack draws heavily on that mickey rourke dude from one of the stories... kinda hellboyish too. Anyway-great great graphics all told! Sounds are awesome tracks work well, but sounds and music clash sometimes leaving neither on top.
