4.0 out of 5 stars Hollywood......please take notes.., 15 Jan 2009
This movie was much better than the crappy hollywood productions combined. Even the CG actors in this outshine the performances of Milla Jovavich and thats saying something!

The plot is easy to follow, i wont give away any details tho.I do admit the CGI looked a bit plastic like at times and the characters showed very little emotion occasionally but on the whole this movie embodies what Resident Evil is about with some funny references to umbrella corp. along the way too.

Seeing Leon and Claire back together was great also, they are like the glue of the RE series.....and of course the good old moaning zombies.

Definitely worth a watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Expected!!!, 16 Jan 2009
When I got this movie for Blu-Ray, I prepared myself for a disappointing action movie that lacked action. And yes, I was disappointed. Not because my fears came true, but because they didn't.

RE:Degenerations is an excellent attempt to create a movie based on a popular game franchise. This genre of movies is extremely difficult as movies based on games fail to live up on expectations (See the live action Resident Evil trilogy and you will understand what i am talking about). This is because game universe is so expansive that movie directors cannot sum up the entire experience in a (maximum) 3 hour long movie. So they end up creating a storyline or characters that has nothing to do with the game but they set those items within the game universe.

RE:Degenerations does an excellent job by bringing the game favourites Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield to movies, making a lot gamers excited. Alot of people might complaint about the storyline that its not as good as the game but this is probably the movie's biggest STRENGTH. Yes you read it right. This movie sets up an entirely new storyline that would introduce people to the Resident Evil universe who are not familiar with the games.

The CGI is not up to the level of Final Fantasy movies but it will beat Shrek movies any day. The voiceovers sometimes feel a little off the mark but it doesn't break the experience in any way.

OVERALL: An excellent movie that stays faithful to the games while being open to newcomers alike. Hollywood, take note.

5.0 out of 5 stars For fans only, 23 Jan 2009
By G. A. Kester "gk_uk" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Resident Evil Degeneration is a curious beast - a full length CGI animated movie with production values getting close to Hollywood fare with much bigger budgets like Beowulf, but with a mythology and storyline that will elude anybody unfmailiar with Capcom's long-standing series of classic videogames.

Taking place seven years after the Government contained the zombie-making T Virus outbreak in Raccoon City with a thermonuclear missile in Resident Evil 3 (a game that bookended the events of Resident Evil 2, to which this is a direct sequel), Degeneration reunites central characters Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield as another outbreak occurs at an airport.

It's all as mad as a box of frogs, with many twists and turns, and that curiously Japanese way of delivering plot in staccato chunks of frantic action and staid dialogue (one of the characters even sounds just like Basil Exposition from Austin Powers!)

The film has it's gross-out moments, mostly associated with another G Monster (the last one being William Birkin in Resident Evil 2) but unlike the games is curiously shy with its gore. While you do see a fair bit (mostly bullet hits), on many occasions some actions (like zombie bites) are presented off screen, or through people's reactions. There are some stand out set-pieces too, such as zombies flopping out of a crashed aeroplane and a contaminated research facility slowly burying itself.

Of course, fans will lap up the details and atmosphere, as did I (RE2 was the first game I ever pre-ordered, so amazed was I by Resident Evil in 1996!) and nods to the games (Leon and Claire meet under the same circumstances AND line of dialogue as they did in the RE2!) It also seems to set up a whole new plot arc that one feels will be returned to later, as well as introducing the TriCell Corporation featured in the RE5 trailers.

The animation is generally excellent, although not quite out of the uncanny valley, and the lip-synch is way off in places. Oh, and from a personal point of view the new character Angela looks scarily like one of my exes, though I suspect I will be the only reviewer to find this creepy!

The Blu Ray transfer is pristine, as you would imagine from a digital stem, and the extras are lightweight but decent (the "goof" track has some very surreal moments indeed!)

Bottom line is that if you're a fan of RE then this is a must-buy, and far more satifying than Hollywood's live-action non-canon entires. If you don't know the games then you'll most likely hate it!
