Product Description

Something very strange is happening in the quiet coastal village of Potters Bluff where tourists and transients are warmly welcomed, then brutally murdered. But even more shocking is when these slain strangers suddenly reappear as normal, friendly citizens around town. Now the local sheriff (James Farentino of The Final Countdown) and an eccentric mortician (Oscar® winner Jack Albertson in his final feature film performance), must uncover the horrific secret of a community where some terrifying traditions are alive and well... and no one is ever really Dead & Buried. Robert Englund (A Nightmare on Elm Street) co-stars in this genuinely chilling horror hit written by Robert Shusett and Dan O'Bannon (Alien), directed by Gary A. Sherman (Poltergeist III) and featuring ultra-grisly gore effects by Oscar® winner Stan Winston (Terminator 2, Aliens). Dead & Buried is now presented in eye-popping High Definition, completely uncut and uncensored, and loaded with revealing extras.

Dead and Buried is a half decent idea executed with surprising restraint but which is so low key that it feels like you’re attending a compliance lecture rather than watching a horror film that tries to put a new spin on zombies. Dan O’Bannon and Ronald Shusett’s script is set in one of those small, permanently overcast towns that time and most people have passed by. The few who do stop there find themselves mutilated and murdered, much to the consternation of local sheriff James Farentino, who’s even less happy when the bodies start disappearing and his wife, Melody Anderson, starts developing an interest in voodoo and keeping secrets, among them her regular chats with big band-loving local mortician Jack Albertson. You can see where it’s going, but not why it seems to go there quite so slowly and monotonously. Death Line director Gary Sherman’s rather leisurely approach sort of works in the opening sequence as it lulls you into a false sense of security before things get nasty, but it becomes increasingly lethargic, failing to build tension or shocks even as the killings multiply. He’s not helped by Steve Poster’s dreary cinematography, flat and lacking in much range or detail and not imaginative enough to convince you that there might be something nasty lurking in the murk. In many ways it feels surprisingly similar to the same year’s Strange Behavior, but not in a good way: when the final revelations come long after you’ve guessed them for yourself, the sensation is not so much shock or catharsis as relief that it’s finally got to the point. Sadly, Dead and Bored is more like it.Read more ›

this a great horror any fan should have this but my review is about the blu ray version well let me start in saying is it better then the dvd version ummm only slightly because there is alot of grain at the start of the film and through out and other scenes looks great it just one of them films that never going to looks great on blu ray like other films which is a shame as it such a classic. if the whole film picture was clear i would give it 5 stars but had to kncok 1 off because there still to much grain. The sound of the film is great no problems there and good extras the same as the dvd version so overall if you already have this on dvd save money and keep your dvd and wait till they can improve the picure even more.

HASH(0x95717da4) out of 5 stars Bravo Blue Underground! 7 Feb. 2009
By Timothy Ramzyk - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase
In the sea of forgettable FRIDAY THE 13th sequels and clones came this little creative and disturbing gem from the early 80's wave of gruesome horror.

Several people passing through the quaint and picturesque town of Potter's Bluff die terrible, violent deaths only to turn up as upstanding members of the community days later. What's going on? Well, I wouldn't dream of telling, but you'll have a lot of fun finding out.

Blue Underground bravely chose to bring DEAD AND BURIED to blu-ray in spite of it's low-budget and humble production values. Visually, the result may not be on a par with some glossy production shot yesterday, but it nonetheless faithfully reproduces the imagery of this film as it originally appeared, and this is the best you are ever likely to see DEAD AND BURIED look. I had the deluxe DVD treatment, and this Blu-ray is IMO a worthy upgrade of a great little shocker.

HASH(0x95714c60) out of 5 stars A very watchable horror film 3 Jan. 2010
By Paul Hite - Published on Amazon.com

I did like this film and I just watched it for the second time. I give it a very solid 3 stars. But I'm puzzled by the other reviews. I would give Alien 4 stars and Aliens 5 stars. This film does not reach those lofty heights. Even though it's encoded for 7.1 sound, I didn't hear much coming from the surrounds. And while it may be in high-def, it is rather grainy. This is not real surprising with a film this old. But advertising it as high-def with 7.1 sound creates expectations which are not met. The film billed itself as being made by the folks who made Alien. Again, it is raising expectations needlessly. People are going to expect a film equal to Alien in gorgeous hi-def with stunning 7.1 surround sound. This film can't deliver that. But it is a very good grade B horror film and it is worth watching several times.

The cast is very strong. It is cool to see a young Robert Englund. And Jack Albertson's performance as the undertaker is worth an Academy Award. James Farentino never wins any awards but he never delivers a bad performance either. It was good to see him again. Also the film is now a period piece due to its age. It was fun watching the sheriff (or his aide) use a telex to investigate. And we have great fx for a low budget pre-cgi film. The story made no sense, but that is often the case with horror.

So yes, it's a nice 3 star horror film, not another Alien.

HASH(0x9571fb4c) out of 5 stars excellent horror movie goes blu ray. 10 May 2009
By Michael Dobey - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Blu-ray
"Dead and buried" was a hit book before it was made into movie and released in 1980. The book wasn't even that old when the flick came out. And the movie was successful because it was well done and very effective in following the books story. It wasn't a drive in b movie cheapie in it's day either it was put out to compete with other higher budget studio efforts and did a good job because it's a great story. The blu ray version only improves the viewing pleasure of this movie. And the ending is still shocking today if you haven't seen the movie before. All the actors are first class and are way above the b movie level (which has it's own level of ratings and charm) that most horror films were at. James Farentino and Jack Albertson really do a excellent job in this movie and the supporting cast shines as well. The effects are from the early 1980's era but still effective and complement the story very well. Blu ray is the only way to go on this movie even though the standard version is excellent as well.

HASH(0x9572afc0) out of 5 stars AN EARLIER VERSION OF RE-ANIMATOR, A PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER VERSION 13 May 2014
By Ben30 - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Blu-ray Verified Purchase
DEAD AND BURIED
released in Theaters 1981, very low budget you can tell in the way the film is made
the film is about a Deranged Funeral Mortician who re-animates Dead bodies
in his coastal village of Potters Bluff, the reanimated bodies are the Citizens of the town
the Town's Sherriff is on the case and finds out that the tourists are being murdered
by the re animated bodies
who are then being re-animated by the towns Funeral Mortician to re-appear as normal town citizens
so it's a cycle of murder
the last scene has a big twist where the Sherriff finally shoots Dead the Funeral mortician
and the Sherriff finds out that he's a re-animated Dead body aswell.
a very creepy chilling story, very similar to Re-animator but more Psychological thriller/Horror than lots of blood and Gore
Dan O'Bannon wrote the script so you know this film has been well written
Stan winston did the special make up effects in the film, his first film doing special effects make up

this Blue underground blu-ray release
is the best version you'll get of this film,
all new 71 Master audio mix and new High definition widescreen transfer
so the picture quality does look fantastic very nice clear & sharp picture quality
there are new extras aswell
40mins interview with Stan winston, a interview with Robert Englund & Dan O Bannon
there's also 2 commentaries
Director Gary sherman, Producer Ronald shusett & actress Linda Turley
One of my favourite Dan' O'Bannon films
5 stars for this new blu-ray version
