3.0 out of 5 stars Good movie, bad title., 5 Feb 2009
By M. S. Skidmore (Kinver, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Director Stuart Gordon (he of Re-Animator, From Beyond and Dagon fame) does it again - getting himself all down and dirty with a neat little brutal horror flick that looks like it cost twenty dollars - but his sheer expertise behind the camera ensures he makes that low budget count in every scene.

The screenplay (by longtime Gordon alumnus Dennis Paoli) is a strictly by the numbers exercise - (freak locked up in castle, gets loose and terrorises mild-mannered family), but the sheer verbosity that is displayed and the dedication to its ghoulish thrills help elevate this movie ahead of the pack - the gloomy cinematography and the authentic italian gothic setting propel this monster along. Yet again, Re-animator favorites Jeffrey Combs and Barbara Crampton turn in great performances, but it is the Freak who is the showstopper. Beautifully designed and wonderfully portrayed - a great tragic monster in the old horror movie style.

Well worth a look if you missed it on its initial late 90s release. Worth re-discovering if you did. Recommended.
