Amazon.co.uk Review

The last of the four commission direct-to-DVD spin-off movies for Futurama, Into The Wild Green Yonder fortunately leaves us salivating for more. Will we get them? Possibly, but for now, it’s perhaps wiser to deal with what we’ve got.

Into The Wild Green Yonder continues the environmental theme that has underpinned many of the specials, with the plan this time surrounding Amy’s dad, Leo Wong, and his desire to sweep away part of the galaxy so that he can build a golf course (the biggest of its type in the universe, naturally). As this plan unfolds, Fry manages to pick up some mind-reading abilities and Bender embarks on an affair, amongst other events. And while Into The Wild Green Yonder does focus tightly on a handful of characters, leaving some of the others a little short-changed, the star attractions here all get plenty of time.

And that’s been one of the strengths of these DVD spin-offs. Running to the best part of 90 minutes, they’ve taken their time to set things up, and made the most of the extended running time. Into The Wild Green Yonder is no different, and really benefits--albeit at the cost of one or two slower moments--from having a bit more space. The end result is a very funny, enjoyable way to spend 90 minutes, and one of the best of the spin-off movies, too. Here’s hoping though that for Futurama, this isn’t actually the end… --Jon Foster

Synopsis

FUTURAMA is an animated sci-fi created by Matt Groenig, the mastermind behind THE SIMPSONS. The story centres on Philip Fry, who in 1999 accidentally got himself cryogenically frozen while working a dead-end job as a pizza delivery boy. Waking up in the year 3000, he's given another chance, and goes to work at the Planet Express Corporation, again as a delivery boy, but this time to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. He also befriends Leela, a beautiful one-eyed mutant alien, and Bender, a robot with a substance abuse problem. In this fourth full-length instalment the infamous and down-at-heel crew of Planet Express is about to embark on another adventure. This time Leela is on the run, Bender is in love and Fry is, well, saving the universe from some dark creatures threatening the future Green Age to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars In a word.... EPIC!, 24 Feb 2009

Could this be the end of Futurama? Let's hope not!
From 2003 - 2007 we have had to not only put up with no Futurama but awful Simpsons episodes, despite the fact it isn't funny anymore!
With the successful sales of the first 3 DVDs and a satisfying and EPIC conclusion to this 'season', all we can do is keep our fingers crossed for more of the Planet Express crew!

5.0 out of 5 stars The end?, 19 Feb 2009

If you already own the boxsets of Futurama, and have enjoyed the movies, its probably a safe bet to say you can stop reading here and buy this. You wont be disappointed. The last of the 4 straight-to-DVD movies is undoubtedly the best, with the team back on form for the last (?) outing for the crew.

The plot, in standard futurama fashion, manages to evolve and take its time, rather than jumping in and rushing. For fans of the series, there are a number of clever in-jokes, and several long running plot lines are wrapped up. As well as being one of the funniest pieces of film I've seen in a while, with the Robot Don's appearance being particularly good, there are some genuinely touching moments, with a conclusion that is both heartwarming and emotional, and will leave many fans with a lump in their throat.

So is it the end? The conclusion is suitably satisfying, while being left open enough to be continued. So here's hoping....

4.0 out of 5 stars The best of the four movies, 15 Feb 2009
By Mr. W. E. Forster "wozza_85" (UK) - See all my reviews

This is definately the best of the four straight to DVD Futurama movies and a good send off for the show. Where the majority of the gags in previous outings felt somewhat strained and unusally 'gross out', thankfully in this episode the clever one liners and visual gags that made me regard Futurama as one of the wittier animated shows are back. There's also a lot more dumping on Zoidberg, which always gets a laugh from me...

'Into the Wild Green Yonder' has a plot that flows much better than the other movies. However, the side story of Bender's involvement with the Don Bot's Moll does disappear quite quickly, but thankfully all of the other plot points set up in what would be the first 'part' are all followed through to a satisfying conclusion.

Speaking of conclusions, I would have to say that as this is technically the show's very end (given that Fox and Groening have both said nothing about it's future) I think the end will equally satisfy and frustrate a lot of fans but is on the whole very suitable even if a little too self knowing. All in all, just we needed from possibly the last ever Futurama episode; a lot of laughs and a glimmer of hope for the future, even if it may be a futile one.
