Album Description
The Smiths "Singles Box" will come in a clamshell card box containing the
first ten UK-issued singles in their original picture sleeves. The projected 4th single - "Still Ill" (which was pressed as DJ promo "A" label singles, but ultimately got passed over and replaced by "Heaven
Knows I'm Miserable Now"), presented in it's original form, and the Dutch release of
"The Headmaster Ritual" housed in it's black & white "cowboy" sleeve - the rarest commercially issued single. The box is completed with four contemporary badges and a poster featuring the single artworks. All singles utilise the original production masters from the period. A must have item, and limited to 7500 copies only.

The music's fine of course, but the covers of the singles are a little out of focus. The catalogue numbers & brandings aren't the same as the Rough Trade originals, which were pretty key features when these singles were released in the 80s. The sticker on the front of the box can't be removed so in a few years time the adhesive will be oozing everywhere. The box isn't particularly sturdy, and the badges are a bit lame.

The set is obviously aimed at collectors, and it's clear that a fair bit of effort's been made, so why bother producing such an imperfect set? If Rhino/Warners can't produce facsimiles of the original releases with decent covers, why not just make them variations? Copies of the rare promos aside, I would have preferred these on coloured vinyl, picture discs, or all the individual release's 12" tracks on 7".

The Smiths have always been associated with singles. They were much more a singles band than an albums band. Each single came with an original artsy sleeve. At the time, each fan rushed to their local record shop to get each single.

This box set, while not on the Rough Trade label, is not only very limited, but it faithfully restores the art of each sleeve, in great quality paper. The labels on the records themselves is exactly the same color, design, etc. as my original Rough Trade singles, and even Morrissey's famous etchings are included on the vinyl!

Not only do you get each single in a sturdy, artsy box, you get these songs as high-quality 320 kpbs MP3 Downloads! These are REMASTERED singles and b-sides and NOT all songs are on SOUND OF THE SMITHS DELUXE VERSION!! What this means is even MORE Smiths songs remastered! Remastering sounds great! NO - they DIDN'T 'just make it louder'! Johnny Marr himself remastered these songs with his mastering partner Frank Artwright. If you're a Smiths fan and a collector, you'll want to grab this set before it's gone.

I recommend this box set for several reasons: the format, I like vinyl and think it's more collectable than cd; the related period of the Smiths first 10 singles that's my favourite one; the limited (and numbered) edition with two further rare singles, four badges and a little poster; the sound that comes out is very hi-fi and powerful; the reproduction of the original sleeves is very good, Rhino has reproduced also the etchings made by Morrissey!; the box has a reasonable price and it's also possible to download the entire set list for free; Moz is involved in the project (there's a film star also on the box set cover, no band pictures this time!).
If you are barely a Smiths fan, buy it without hesitation.
