Product Description

CD Description
The Mighty Upsetter, is a fabulous rematch with Adrian Sherwood, ingeniously laced through with echoes of vintage Black Ark basslines, melodies and rhythms.

About the Artist
Lee "Scratch" Perry, Jamaican music's most celebrated producer, has been through more creative rebirths than most artists. At 73 years of age, he is currently enjoying another. His first hit was Return of Django, a brassy rocksteady instrumental targeted at British skinheads. Circa 1970, he became a mentor to Bob Marley's Wailers, then a middle-ranking ska trio. In an intense, fractious relationship, Perry convinced Marley to sing about the poverty of Trench Town and his Rastafarian beliefs. Together, they set the blueprint for roots reggae and Marley's stardom. Perry was also arguably dub's first architect, inventing the remix with the most basic of studio technology.. Throughout an erratic career, Perry has walked the wire between genius and madness. He has never stayed in one place too long. He cut his last two truly great albums in London in the late 1980s, alongside On-U Sound supremo, Adrian Sherwood. Since then, he has lived with his Swiss wife in rustic seclusion near Zurich, releasing a stream of European productions, few of which have greatly enhanced his legacy. The Mighty Upsetter, is a fabulous rematch with Sherwood, ingeniously laced through with echoes of vintage Black Ark basslines, melodies and rhythms. He still believes, he says, in music as a magic ritual. However, Perry unquestionably cultivated that air of shamanism to frighten off the cut-throats and looters who roam Jamaica. In his heady mix of ganja, voodoo and over-work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything start from Scratch - Pipecock Jaxxon is back!, 18 Dec 2008
By S. N. Bordoli "buzzmeeks" (uk) - See all my reviews

I'd long given up on expecting great new albums and was satisfied with combing the back catalogue, but this is well worth a look. With Roots Manuva on one track and lots of reworking of old Black Ark rythms by Adrian Sherwood this is a real winner. Its heart warming to hear Lee with Adrian Sherwood again working to such great effect. Its funny, its powerful, its everything we've come to love and respect.

I've managed to see Scratch live a few times over the last few years and this studio album encapsulates his continuing brilliance. Much better than Repentance (2008), that I bought in error thinking that it was this album. Enjoy. It'll grow On-U..

5.0 out of 5 stars The Mighty Upsetter indeed, 9 Feb 2009
By G-Steppa (Cambridge, UK) - See all my reviews
Lee Perry is back with British producer Adrian Sherwood and as such, has made without doubt his best album in 20 years. Sherwood's production is outstanding and he always demands a little more from Scratch than most. Scratch provides a witty and sometimes rude mix of lyrics. Guests include British hip hop man Roots Manuva busting some rhymes, always good.

Some of the rhythms are familar, Black Ark classics in fact, but Scratch has put a new slant on the words and Sherwood the same on the music. Lee's Garden is an equal to Leroy Sibbles' original 'Garden of Life' and the same can be said for The Silvertones 'Rejoice Jah Jah Childeren'. If you love reggae and you love Lee Perry, you'll not be disappointed.
