Great American Bash back to it's best!!!, 21 Oct 2008
The Great American Bash 2008
Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in NEW YORK CITY.
Previous GAB have usually been major let downs with poor bookings and weak, thrown together main events....this year....it all changed.
MATCH 1 - FATAL FOUR WAY MATCH FOR THE WWE TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIPS
ZACH RYDER & CURT HAWKINS VS JOHN MORRISON & THE MIZ (C) VS JESSE & FESTUS VS FINLAY & HORNSWOGGLE
A solid 10 minute opener with some highly entertaining spots, This match really highlights the new cream rising to the top of the tag division in WWE, Hornswoggle with a suicide dive is great and Festus dominating every breathing thing with the squared circle. All in all though this is a match that was set up soley to get the tag straps back on smackdown, they may give you a clue in to who wins.
MATCH 2 - UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP
SHELTON BENJAMIN (GOLD STANDARD) VS MATT HARDY (C)
Another solid and stiff encounter here, two athelets at the top of there games, Shelton shows his potential here and the best man wins, nothing to memorable but this was another one of those see thru matches, Hardy dropping the strap to go on to bigger things, just look where he is now. Both combatants come out of this as hypothetical winners as both now wear gold for there respective brands.
MATCH 3 - ECW CHAMPIONSHIP.
MARK HENRY (C) VS TOMMY DREAMER.
This felt like it didnt really belong on this PPV, but i still love to see and hear the old skool EC DUB fans whenever Tommy is around, bit of a squash match here and a pointless heel turn to finish the matchup.
MATCH 4
SHAWN MICHAELS (HBK) VS CHRIS JERICHO (Y2J)
For any "real" wrestling fan you know that when these two enter the ring your in for something very special every single time, and here it was no different, Jericho playing on the "eye" injury that HBK sustained weeks before and the more these two go toe to toe the stiffer it becomes, we will have to wait until unforgiven come out to see just how stiff they can work. A wonderful match, a lot of blood and some showstopper moves by Mr wrestlemania, these two have had the best feud i have seen in many many years, from my persepective these one day HOF's are the greatest storytellers in the business ever.
MATCH 5 - WWE DIVAS CHAMPIONSHIP
MICHELLE MC'COOL (C) VS NATALYA
A decent womans bout here, 5 mins in length so people in attendance and at home can get there breathe after the last exchange!!
Michelle McCool is looking like a really good worker here, maybe the next Trish, or is that just wishful thinking!!!
MATCH 6 - WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
CM PUNK (C) VS BATISTA
Good match that lets Punk show that he is at main event level, I sort of feel sorry for Punk here though as it feels as though Batista (and the WWE universe) is showing him his place and that he'll never be a "real" champion, ending is disappointing and belittles Punks reign. Putting a World Heavyweight Chamionship match so low on the card certainly reflects that.
MATCH 7 - NY CITY PARKING LOT BRAWL
JBL VS JOHN CENA
This matchup was filmed in two segments, the first 12 mins (backstage part) was filmed the day before and is a great little hardcore match using everything at there disposal, setting a car on fire with Cena trapped inside was great and seeing the doctor of thuganomics nail his whole bodyweight through a car door was also impressive. They then end up on the areana floor with the live audience looking on. The end sequence is also a standout moment with cena being hurled off the stage and through a car windscreen, Cena bleeds, Cena bleeds!!!
MATCH 8 - WWE CHAMPIONSHIP
TRIPLE H (C) VS EDGE
Anyone who is anyone knew that this was going to be great, I've personally been waiting for a long time to see these two lock up, shame about the story line going in to this one as i felt it should have been scrapped or developed over a longer period of time, put the storyline to the back of your mind though and your left with a great match worthy of the main event, ending is a shame with two woman taking the spotlight off the two guys who just gave it there all but all in all a great PPV and I can't wait for Summerslam!!!
8/10

better , 6 Jan 2009
As my learned other reviewer states here, the great american bash in its WWE guise hasnt really been up to much,The WCW version contained some great moments in history, anyway, this years version was impressive at times and that can only herald a new dawn for the pay per view .
The WWE tag team belts were contested in the opening bout in a fatal four way,the champs going into the match were john morrison and the miz,the other team comprised of jesse and festus, finlay and hornswoggle(crikey)and ryder and hawkins. This match had the odd silly spot in it but was fought at a fair old pace and with that being said it was seldom dull, not a bad opener at all.
The united states championship was was up grabs next as the champ matt hardy went up against the gold standard himself, shelton benjamin,a man i tip great things for in 2009,this match was excellent,i suspected it would be good,it was better than that, twisting and turning, quality moves, good counters and all that makes the business good,i can think of no higher praise.
The ECW champion mark henry went up against tommy dreamer in a poor match next, essentially it was a squash match which says alot for the ECW brand, anyway, there wasnt anything to really enjoy here and a silly heel turn at the end didnt lead to a single thing in truth so dont sweat it if you never see this match.
Shawn michaels went up against chris jericho next in a match that was brutal,it started with the high flying moves but ended up a labour of war,it certainly got savage so everyone was treated to the two sides of the business and these two men pulled off a quality match with a good outcome.
The divas championship was contested next in a match so bad that i think the arena went for a wee kip, understandable.
The world heavyweight champion cm punk defended his title next against a man who was a firm favourite to steamroll over him, batista, this match was good,it wasnt superb, both men have differing styles and just about made this a match worth watching again.
A parking lot brawl was up next as JBL and john cena went toe to toe in an engaging encounter,it certainly was entertaining and contained some quality moments, there was the odd sloppy moment but it was a good way to settle the feud at the time, although this feud is back again and a title is on the line.
The main event was up next,The WWE champ triple H went up against edge who was on good form going into the bout,to be honest this wasnt a great main event,it was just a bit sluggish and edge should have been given more time on the ascendency here,it isnt a bad match,it just didnt shine enough, the event overall isnt bad at all and is worthy of 3.5 stars.
