Digital IXUS 870 IS Silver

With a satisfying, high-quality build in gold or silver, the 10.0 Megapixel Digital IXUS 870 IS commands attention. Capture panoramic landscapes or whole rooms of friends with a 4x wide-angle zoom – then enjoy images in stunning detail on a 3.0" PureColor LCD II screen.

Digital IXUS 870 IS Silver Highlights

10.0 Megapixels

10.0 Megapixels

The number of megapixels determines the amount of sharp detail a digital camera can record. With more megapixels, you can print at larger sizes, plus crop and enlarge without sacrificing quality. IXUS cameras provide all the resolution you need for finely detailed, photo-quality prints with plenty of scope for post-shoot cropping.

A full 10.0 megapixels of resolution ensure rich depth and detail, and lets you enlarge and crop images freely.

4x Optical Zoom

4x Wide-angle Optical Zoom

The camera's Genuine Canon 4x Wide (28mm) Optical Zoom not only gets you in close, but performs with all the clarity and brilliance you'd expect from the world's leader in advanced optics technology.

Optical Image Stabiliser

Optical Image Stabilizer

Any slight shake while hand-holding a camera can cause blurred photos. Canon’s optical Image Stabilizer (IS) technology ensures crisp, clear images by detecting and correcting this camera shake. The camera is able to microscopically adjust its own lens with absolute accuracy up to 4,000 times every second, so the image you see is the image you capture. Image Stabilizer is especially useful at full zoom, which exaggerates camera movements, and in low-light settings that call for slower shutter speeds.

Motion Detection Technology

Motion Detection Technology / High ISO/IS

Canon’s Motion Detection Technology uses several methods to detect camera and subject movement and set exposure accordingly. The brightness of subject and background, movement of the subject (based on comparison of frames over time) Face Detection information and camera shake information from the optical Image Stabilizer (IS) gyros are all taken into account. Where motion is detected the camera automatically selects the appropriate ISO level to achieve a shot with minimal noise and zero blur.

Face Detetction AF/AE/FE/WB

Face Detection Technology

Utilising the power of DIGIC III, Canon’s Face Detection Technology ensures superb people shots by automatically detecting subjects in the frame and setting the correct focus, flash level and exposure.

Red-eye Correction

Red Eye Correction

This popular feature can now remove red-eye automatically during shooting, as well as in playback mode.

DIGIC 4

DIGIC IV

Processing the vast amount of data generated by the PowerShot SX1 IS calls for power and speed. Enter DIGIC 4 with iSAPS technology, Canon’s most advanced imaging processor yet. It is the power of DIGIC that delivers the superb image quality, responsive camera performance, faster AF, faster continuous shooting and extended battery life. DIGIC processors are so fast they can read, process, compress and write image data back to the buffer between exposures, reducing the data bottleneck for extended continuous shooting.

3.0-inch (7.6cm) LCD

3.0" LCD Screen

The camera's 3.0-inch LCD screen gives you the big picture, whether you're shooting, reviewing or showing off your images. This extra-durable, high-resolution screen with tough scratch-resistant coating on the anti-reflective, PureColor LCD II screen offers a crisp, clear picture to make shooting, playback and using the camera's menu functions especially convenient.

Sunset Scene Mode

Sunset Scene Mode

"Sunset" is added to the Special Scene Modes. This mode optimizes settings such as exposure and white balance, thereby making it possible to reproduce brilliant sunset shots.

30 FPS VGA Movies

30 FPS VGA Movies

Shoot super-smooth, VGA -quality movies with sound. In-camera editing gives you creative control and slow-motion playback highlights every precious moment. Choose Long Play mode for stronger compression that allows twice as much video to be stored on your memory card.

Additional Features

iSAPS
Like a built-in photographer’s assistant, iSAPS is determining the optimal settings for each image even before you take a shot. It analyses the scene using PhotoSpace – an in-camera library of photographic data about the way people take pictures. It then controls the exposure, focus and white balance to ensure you get the best from every shot.

My Colours
Add a personal touch to your image or movie with Canon’s My Colours. Choose from vivid blue for the sky, antique sepia for the portrait or classic black and white for the landscape. These creative options and many more – normally available only on a computer – can be applied directly from your camera, before or after the shot.

    4.0 out of 5 stars IXUS 870IS -quick review, 23 Oct 2008
By KTL (UK) - See all my reviews
I have just bought this camera and it is living up to expectations after upgrading from my IXUS 800. It has a great 3 inch screen, good optics and good picture results, excellent quality feel about it, quick to take and review images, useful 4x zoom and the control layout has been improved so it is as about as easy to use as it could be. It may not have the HD video capabilities of some others bit this camera's claim to fame is that it does what is says better than most other camera- Great photos, easy to use and a great screen for reviewing. I have bought a screen protector though as it would be a shame to damage the screen as it is so nice!

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent camera, 13 Jan 2009
By E. Chater (London) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)
I bought this camera to replace my Lumix which is supposed to be the best digital camera around. The ixus 870 beats it hands down.
I charged it once for 2.5 hrs before going to Lapland. The temperature there was -19 and i wasn't sure if anything would work at such low temperatures. Not only did the camera work outside in winds at -19, the battery was still going strong after 4 days of being used a lot.
It is fantastic in very low light even without flash (using the iso3200 option with the camera switch to SCN). I took a lot of photos from the back of a sled being pulled by huskies so not only was the light very low- but it was a very bumpy ride and the photos have turned out very well.
Other settings are fantastic too- such as the sunset setting, indoors, snow etc.
You can also adjust the photos during playback- remove red eye and adjust the colours. Very useful and intuitive. I still haven't read the cd rom manual.
I chose this camera above the 970 as I preferred the wider angle to extra zoom. I also prefer the design of the 870. I cannot recommend this camera highly enough.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not as impressed as others, 15 Dec 2008
By Carpetcone (North Somerset UK) - See all my reviews
I bought a Canon Ixus 870 due to the good experiences of older Canon cameras and I wanted a replacement for my Sony P-9 which I've used for 5 years or so, the wide angle lens was also an added bonus.
The first one from Amazon had a damaged LCD screen plus I wasn't happy with the quality of the pictures taken. Amazon replaced it very quickly so full marks to Amazon and their carriers for that.
The replacement camera arrived and the picture quality was the same as the first one. Blurred and out of focus were the main problems.I tried different settings, Auto and Programme, but in the end decided I couldn't live with a camera costing nearly £200 that took so-so pictures. Compared with my old Sony P-9 there is not the advance that I had expected and an older Ixus 400 we have also gives clearer pictures considering its age.
Checking out other cameras of 10MP and above it would seem basic "snap shot" quality has not moved on from the 4MP days.
I just want a camera that takes good pictures that are not blurry or noisy at low ISO settings and in my opinion the Ixus 870 wasn't it.
