Product Description

CD Description

After finding fame in alt-country legends The Jayhawks, Mark Olsen and Gary Louris revive their old songwriting partnership for this first offering of original material since theywere in their old band, 'Ready For The Flood'. Taking theircues from similar influences to The Jayhawks such as John Renbourn and Roy Harper, Olson & Louris take us through several gently strummed and plucked ditties. Fans of the duo's previous work under other auspices will find much to enjoy in 'Ready For The Flood'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Almost the Jayhawks, 9 Sep 2008

This review is from: Ready for the Flood (Audio CD)
I've been given a press copy of this and just wanted to say that if you loved the Jayhawks you will not be disappointed by this. Although Gary Louris does not get a mention on the Amazon copy his name is stencilled onto the CD I have and I do believe that's him on the cover so although it doesn't say how much of the songwriting was down to him this is very much a joint work.

So we have two men playing acoustic guitars singing the most melodic tunes with the sweetest harmonies which makes for a simple record, yet one which you just want to play again as soon as it's finished. It has a lush wistfulness about it that for me just hits the mark. I appreciate this may prove to be an acquired taste but when you see the success that lesser "singer songwriters" have (any one for a Blunt?) then these guys should be right up there on their own merits and as a duo compare more than favourably with CSN and, yes, Simon and Garfunkel. I'm sure they'd hate the comparison but the quality of the songs and the singing make it apt for me.

Don't expect Heavy metal - just good honest country tinged folk with songs you will instantly recall

5.0 out of 5 stars The Craft of Songwriting is Alive and Well, 8 Jan 2009
By P. Connolly "pc" (London) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
While writing for the Jayhawks, Messrs Olson & Louris penned some true modern classics in terms of both songs and albums. Since then they have both continued to make music of the highest quality. Louris with the Jayhawks and more recently on his outstanding solo effort 'Vagabonds' and Olson with the Creekdippers and also with his extraordinary 'The Salvation Blues'
What is immediately apparent upon listening to their music is that they know how to craft a song. Their ability with both melody and harmonies as well as the beauty of their musicianship has always set them apart from their peers.
Here, again, is a selection of songs from the top drawer of song craft.
To hear them at their finest check out 'Saturday Morning On Sunday Street' and 'Doves And Stones'. But the collection as a whole is to be celebrated.
They deserve the highest accolades and their reunion holds a real promise of a new dawn in what has become a rather stagnant genre.

3.0 out of 5 stars americana no1 hardly, 25 Mar 2009
as much as i loved the jayhawks and as much as i was anticipating this album, i have to say i think this record sounds complacent tired and pretty much like two guys reuniting for all the wrong reasons. a couple of highlights admittedly but by and by yawnsville usa
