Synopsis

Actor-turned-director Brian Robbins (VARSITY BLUES, THE PERFECT SCORE) is at the helm of comedian Eddie Murphy's alien adventure, MEET DAVE. Murphy stars as the minuscule captain of an alien spaceship that lands on Earth in the shape of a human being that looks just like him. The tiny crew is responsible for making the spaceship look and act like a human being as they search for a powerful orb that went off course and landed in Manhattan. Along the way, the captain--aka Dave--is befriended by Josh (Austyn Lind Myers), a fifth-grade boy who is being raised by his artist mother, Gina (Elizabeth Banks), since the death of his heroic Naval officer father. Although Dave and his crew land on Earth believing that the human race is inferior, they soon realize that there is something to be said for emotions, feelings, and friendship.

The fun in this film lies in watching the spaceship Murphy try to assimilate as a human. His exaggerated facial expressions are priceless, and his skill at physical comedy is apparent throughout the film. Dave is a sponge soaking up everything around him. The crew's attempts to understand human culture are also amusing, as they get most of their cultural information from Google and Yahoo. Gabrielle Union stars as No. 3, the cultural officer, while Ed Helms is No 2. the second in command who thinks that his captain is adapting to Earth way too easily. Kevin Hart is No. 17, the crew member charged with dealing with many of the spaceship's internal functions.

3.0 out of 5 stars entering the domain of entertainment with eddie murphy , 19 Sep 2008

There are as many cliches floating both with in movies and their critical appraisal as are there in our humble planet system .

This a sweet comic satire on the American paranoia of invasion from outside just as much as a tribute to the nobler instincts of the human species .

While the aliens land to strip us of our natural recources ,again a pun on the human race which has plundered each other without any pangs of guilt in the name of any thing from silk to oil ,we get a liliputian alien race which acts like our starship troopers in a spoof and make for 2 hours of solid entertainment with every stereotype revisited in a fresh mamnner mainly accredited to the huge talent of Eddie Murphy .

While it is becoming a free for all to blame Eddie for every cinematic imProprietary and all offences of the so-called political correctness are also thrown onto his strong shoulders ,he has megavolts of power and tons of talent to pull off any coup.

Just like Dave MUNCH KING ,the most common name on the planet that EDDIE plays here in the form of both the alien ship and its belovedly correct captain as a paragon of virtue in a double role ,where he makes quaint fun of everything from our currency to food culture ,sleeping arrangements in manhattan ,shopping malls, and virtually every other institution including the department of homeland security.

A definite watch for it's tongue-in-cheek humor and endearing sentimental homage to our movies culture itself in the form of Meat loaf and IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE .

The kid in the movie is just as cute as the alien ship itself and it's an entrtaining farce intended to take on E-T.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice surprise., 6 Nov 2008
By mummy spoon (South Yorkshire) - See all my reviews
I was surprised that I actually liked this film, I only went to see it at the cinema as it was on,on one of those cheap kids club showings on a saturday morning , I didn't have high hopes for it as I am not really a fan of Eddie Murphy or even of comedy films for that matter but was pleasantly surprised, I got in to it from the very start and it kept my two young childrens attention too.The concept of the film is fun and it's suitable for all ages, I won't go into the whole plot, just give it a go you may just like it as much as we did.

A bit of a waste. I could not "get" this film. A funny idea, Eddie Murphy pulls some faces and talks in a comic voice. There is a co-star from the US TV office series. Read more

I really like Eddy Murphy, however this film is just terrible. The special effects aren't very good, and the story is really boring. Also, Eddy just isn't a very good actor. Read more
