CD Description

30 tracks recorded between 1903 and 1957, spanning the world from England (Percy Grainger’s recording of the title song, sung by Joseph Taylor in 1908) to Japan (the bewilderingly beautiful "Seigaiha", by the Japanese Imperial Palace Band, five years earlier). Organ rolls from Georgia run alongside Tamils impersonating motorized transport and rumba from Beirut; forties fado sits next to the songs of Bengali beggars. The tracks have been restored at Abbey Road and are beautifully presented, with extensive contemporary photographs. There are recognizable names such as Joseph Taylor, the incomparable Fairuz, the Mighty Sparrow and an uncredited Ruben Gonzales, and extraordinary oddities including Vengopal Chari’s rather unfunny "Laughing" and the peculiarly affecting hand bells of "Gas All Clear".

This has the appearance of a random collection of snippets from the EMI archive. However, as the patchwork builds up track by track, a fascinating picture emerges of the world in the early 20th century. To me, the musical pieces were a bonus - my top recommendation would be the 1920s Indian imitating motor cars. If you like the thought of that too, you'll love this!

Lots of entertaining and random old location recordings from around the globe, concentrating on "exotic" and indigenous musics. Beautifully curated and packaged, as always, by Honest Jons Records in an exquisitely designed and printed double digipack. A great example of collectable audio releases, similar in quality to the recent hardbound book + cds edition of Victrola Favorites. If you like this try Honest Jons' London Belongs To Me series. Beautiful music from another time.
