Synopsis

Following his expulsion from Unseen University for his inability to master basic magic, Rincewind (David Jason, THE HOGFATHER) the wizard is compelled to become a Discworld tour guide to their first ever tourist. Twoflower (Sean Astin, THE LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy) is a rather innocent insurance salesman who Rincewind exposes to the dangers of Discworld's mythical creatures, the threat of fire in Ankh-Morpork, Death (the physical incarnation) and the possible end of the world.
THE COLOUR OF MAGIC is based on the acclaimed Terry Pratchett fantasy books THE LIGHT FANTASTIC and THE COLOUR OF MAGIC. This thrilling, action-packed production features an impressive supporting cast that includes Christopher Lee (THE WICKERMAN), Tim Curry (CLUE), and Jeremy Irons (DIE HARD WITH A VENGENCE).

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good, 5 Nov 2008
By Eolake "eolake.blogspot.com" (Lancashire, United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
Rincewind the wizard was never my favorite Terry Pratchett character, but I have to say they did a fine job turning this book into a three-hour film. (Or two TV episodes, whatever.) It had a good cast, including Jeremy Irons and the toothsome newcomer Laura Haddock, who did a fine job in the role as octogenarian Cohen The Barbarian's fair maiden.

Most of all, the dragons, buildings, and space turtles were detailed and beautiful to behold, created on a budget which would have lasted a Hollywood studio through lunch time. We are clearly out of the age where a TV production would have inferior graphics.

I'm hoping they will continue to make films from Pratchett's books, there's a wealth of humor, great stories and outlandish ideas to explore.

3.0 out of 5 stars I really wanted to love this but I didn't, 14 Jan 2009
By Mr. P. Wren "Kriegaffe" (UK) - See all my reviews

I've been an avid reader on and off of Terry Pratchett's books. The Hogfather was good but I wasn't a huge fan of the book so I wasn't hugely disappointed with the film either.

But the Colour of Magic was a book I really enjoyed, so I was really looking forward to the film. The story's there and you see your favourite characters, but most of the humour that's buried in the writing is somehow lost when it goes onto the little screen.

It could be without Terry's comedic descriptions it just becomes a silly story. A bit like watching a comedy show with the sound turned off. You can see the action but the thing that makes it funny is essentially missing.

This seems a harsh review and it's really not meant to be. There's a lot of love and attention to detail gone into The Colour of Magic. Unfortunately for me it was missing the Magic.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing due to poor direction, 30 May 2009
By T. Reed (Hampshire, UK) - See all my reviews

I think the director fell into the trap of trying to get all the story in at the expense of the humour. It felt like he didn't get the point of the books. Cohen the Barbarian's accent was great but where was his dexterity at avoiding injury for example ? A lot of jokes fell flat due to poor timing and set up lines were missed or done wrong, the in-sewer-ants routine and the wizard making a death-proof room being prime examples. It felt like there were jumps in the plot as bits had to be left out to keep within allotted air time yet contrarily the whole thing could have been edited to improve the pace. Might help if you watch it after significant alcohol consumption !

Nice opening shot of The Great A'Tuin shows that the technology certainly exists to bring the Pratchett stories to life but an opportunity was missed here.
