4.0 out of 5 stars ELEMENTAL BRILLIANCE, 3 Sep 2008
By Kelvin J. Dickinson (Leeds, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Back. On. Form.

Even though nothing will ever shine more brightly than THE HINDU TIMES, this is still a fantastic return to similar and very welcome territory. A driving, almost hypnotic, beat underpins NOEL'S razor-sharp guitar and LIAM'S nasally-charged vocals. It works perfectly, speeding along and pausing for breath only for the short but wonderful drum and guitar solos. Of course, nearly everything about THE SHOCK OF THE LIGHTNING is predictable, but this is precisely what OASIS do best. And with lines like "Love is a litany...a magical mystery" the overriding influence is as transparent as a Glass Onion. About the only thing missing here is a crescendo of strings from Sir George bloody Martin.

The video, perhaps unsurprisingly, is a psychedelic Yellow Submarine-style assault on the senses. Bare-faced plundering aside, it's a brilliant visual accompaniment and well worth getting hold of in it's own right.

GEM ARCHER, ANDY BELL and CHRIS SHARROCK are without doubt a vital part of the line-up behind the laughably foul-mouthed but highly gifted GALLAGHER brothers. Each clearly inspires the other and, with THE SHOCK OF THE LIGHTNING, OASIS have proved once again they still have plenty to offer.

VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

3.0 out of 5 stars No shocks here, 7 Feb 2009
By Mike 2000 (London) - See all my reviews
Apologies Oasis fans, but it's just another average Oasis song. It would like to be another Some Might Say or even Hindu Times, but it just isn't memorable enough. If this is the best thing on the album, definitely won't be getting Dig Out Your Soul.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Lead Single In Ages, 24 Sep 2008
This song is awesome. Not too impressed with it to begin with, but it really grows on the listener, particularly the catchy bits like the 'come in come out tonight' refrain and the 'all in good time!' bit in the chorus.

Apart from a couple of dodgy lyrics, this song can do no wrong. The sheer energy behind the song is immense - it really is headbanging stuff. The song also includes a terrific drum solo in the middle of the song, something that is quite rare in an Oasis song. Probably the best thing about the song is that Liam Gallagher's voice is really on top form - sounds like the Liam Gallagher from Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory.

As Oasis lead of singles go, this is the best since the 1997 epic track 'D'You Know What I Mean?'. It pips the brilliant 'Hindu Times' from 2002's Heathen Chemistry (primarily because Liam's vocals aren't raspy like that single), while it walks over Go Let It Out and Lyla.

Great record - would not sound out of place on Definitely Maybe.
