Product Description

Roger Moore's final Bond film sees him once again battling a madman (this time played by Christopher Walken) for control of the world. The fiendish plan on this occasion is to flood California's lucrative 'Silicon Valley' by imploding the San Andreas fault. Grace Jones plays May Day, the obligatory evil sidekick, while former 'Charlie's Angels' star Tanya Roberts had a brush with big screen fame as the Bond Girl, Stacey Sutton. Duran Duran perform the theme song.

From Amazon.co.uk

A View to a Kill, Roger Moore's last outing as James Bond, is evidence enough that it was time to pass the torch to another actor. Beset by crummy action (an out-of-control fire engine?) and featuring a fading Moore still trying to prop up his mannered idea of style, A View to a Kill is largely interesting for Christopher Walken's quirky performance as a sort-of super-villain who wants to take out California's Silicon Valley. Grace Jones has a spookily interesting presence as a lethal associate of Walken's (and who, in the best Bond tradition, has sex with 007 before trying to kill him later), and Patrick Macnee (Steed!) has a warm if brief bit. Even directed by John Glen, who brought some crackle to the Moore years in the Bond franchise, this is a very slight effort. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com

On the DVD: For Roger Moore's final Bond outing the production crew faced the usual quota of difficulties and disasters, the "making-of" documentary reveals: from base jumpers off the Eiffel tower whose antics threatened to jeopardise fragile relations with the Parisian authorities, to Ridley Scott thoughtlessly burning down the 007 at Pinewood right before production was due to start. Patrick MacNee, who has a supporting role in the movie, hands over narrative duties on this one to Rosemary Ford. The commentary is one of those less-than-satisfying montages of comments from various members of cast and crew. Also included is Duran Duran's "A View to a Kill" video (sounding hopelessly dated now), the usual trailers and a brief deleted scene of comic relief inside a Parisian police station. The second documentary concerns the music of Bond--always a crucial ingredient--although it manages the neat diplomatic trick of interviewing both Monty Norman and John Barry without giving the least hint of any controversy about the famous James Bond theme. --Mark Walker --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

At the end of his twelve year reign, Moore closes the book and leaves the series with a bang. Although not my favourite Moore film, the plot has its strong points and there are superb performances from Christopher Walken as mad Max Zorin and the Avengers' Patrick Macnee as Sir Godfrey Tibbett. The action scenes vary from sheer thrilling to downright ridiculous such as the out of control Fire Engine in San Fransisco and the Renault taxi chase through Paris. The film however has one of the most exciting and credible climaxes ever in a Bond film whilst 007 and Zorin battle it out atop the Golden Gate Bridge.
The DVD has the usual booklet, special features and an interview with Roger Moore about ending his spectacular performance and proving that Nobody Does it Better.

I find it astonishing that many people rate Bond movies based on the performance of Bond himself (Witness Lazenby's perpetual drubbing over what is actually a fine performance in an excellent Bond film ('On Her Majesty's Secret Service')). 'A View to a Kill' is victim to the same sort of unfair judgement. Roger Moore does look like he has aged about a decade since 'Octopussy' and the film's particularly youthful Bond girl, matched with a strong focus on athletic stunts, stretches our willingness to accept him in the title role past breaking point (Although, to be fair, Moore wanted to give up the role after 'Octopussy'). However, I find that I prefer this film to 'Octopussy' (I hear the sound of Bond fans choking), and feel that it has been overlooked simply due to the inappropriateness of Moore in the title role.
Okay, it is far from a perfect Bond movie; Stacey Sutton is a forgettable Bond girl, due to no fault of Tanya Roberts, who gives as good a performance as could be given with such a weak character. Despite showing considerable mental and physical muscle in the first half of the film, ahe seems to spend the final climactic three quarters of an hour squealing and occasionally acting as a convenient plot device to explain the science of Zorin's scheme to the audience. The script is also fairly thin, both physically and artistically (but when has that stopped a Bond film?), failing to wring out even a couple of memorable one-liners. Although these criticisms may seem seriously detrimental to the film as a whole, they cannot overcome the serious strengths of the film in other areas.

A View To A Kill is the first Bond I received on DVD and I throughly enjoyed it. Roger Moore is good although I have to admit he is my least favourite Bond. Patrick Macnee is good as Tibbett and Christopher Walken is brilliant as Max Zorin, Bond's latest enemy. Tanya Roberts is average as Stacey Sutton and Grace Jones adds a little more to the script although I think there was a chance to explore Mayday's character further.
This was a good film in which to bow out for Roger Moore.

A great addition to the Bond saga, and a fitting farewell to the greatest Bond of all, Roger Moore. The story tells about how psycotic industrialist Max Zorin(Christopher Walken) and his glamarous sidekick May Day (Grace Jones) plan to cause global destruction to the environment and economy by way of microchips and large explosions! The gadgets are fun, the stunt work is great (Eiffel Tower jump anyone?) and the supporting cast are on fine form, with a juciy role for Mr.Walken as always. With a rousing theme tune edging into the 1980s, Bond is back and still packing the punches!

Roger Moore's last Bond film, "A View to a Kill", is considered by many to be one of the worst films in the series. In my opinion it's underrated. Yes, Roger Moore was getting a bit too old for the part but he still does a good job. My main complaint is Tanya Roberts's character, Stacey Sutton. She's not a very good Bond girl, but it is somewhat redeemed by Grace Jones's May Day character, one of the more colorful (no pun intended) Bond girls. Christopher Walken is a good villain and Bond gets help from Patrick Macnee who also does a good job.

The story is something of a rework of "Goldfinger", but it' still fun and has added some nice twists and been updated to fit the 1980s. The movie offers lots of fun action and in my opinon delivers what I expect from a Bond movie.

A View To A Kill is the film that gets slated by everybody, even Bond fans, but to be fair I'd say it's actually quite all right. Although Roger Moore appears to be tiring of the role of 007 in some of the scenes, he still carries the film's humour excellently and the arched eyebrow is still there. Christopher Walken as Max Zorin is an great villain and more plausible than most. Grace Jones (May Day) is a perfect sidekick, although the costume department really went way over the top with some of her clothes. The fault that everyone finds is that Tanya Roberts screams far too much, and I think I'd agree with that! But the film, although not what you would call the peak of Bond's cinematic career, is still an enjoyable watch for fans of Roger Moore-and I am one.
