Synopsis
James Bond (Roger Moore) is coupled with Russian agent Anya Triple-X Amasova (Barbara Bach) to recover stolen Soviet submarines from evil oceanographer Carl Stromberg (Curt Jurgens) and his gigantic lackey, Jaws (Richard Kiel). When Triple-X learns that Bond killed her boyfriend on a mission in the Alps, she must overcome her selfish notions of revenge and work with 007 for the good of the world. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, the 10th film in the James Bond series, ventures not only into the depths of the ocean but into the deep topic of betrayal and morality as well, placing it among the boldest of the 007 films. In addition to the Bond staple of girls and gadgetry, the film features beautifully shot footage of the Austrian Alps, Venice, and the Egyptian pyramids. Furthermore, director Lewis Gilbert uses the film to push the cinematic envelope with stunning underwater action sequences, that leave the viewer gasping for air and a vodka martini shaken, not stirred.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of Moore's 'FX show' Bonds, 3 Nov 2008
By Trevor Willsmer (London, England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 50 REVIEWER)
The Spy Who Loved Me holds up, along with You Only Live Twice, as the best of the special effects show Bond movies (like Lewis Gilbert's other Bond, the dire Moonraker, it more or less shares the same plot and even identical camera set-ups in places). Planned to turn the Bonds back into blockbusters after the somewhat more down to Earth Harry Saltzman left the series, Cubby Broccoli plays safe with a virtual `greatest hits' compilation album of all your favorite Bond setpieces (the train fight from From Russia With Love, a gadget-filled car a la Goldfinger, a ski chase a la OHMSS, etc), but its put together with skill, panache and a sense of the epic that carries you along. Moore's Bond still has a bit of steel in him and the script is so good you find yourself wondering if it really is the same Christopher Wood responsible for the British soft-porn Confessions series credited as co-writer.

As with others in the series, this repackaged upgrade to 2-disc `Ultimate Edition' from the original single disc issue at times feels more cosmetic than actual in terms of extras (as usual, there are plenty of other potential supplements, such as Movietone newsreel footage of the shoot, that have not been included), although alongside brief archive footage of the massive purpose-built 007 Stage being dedicated, a vintage Roger Moore and a 1977 promo featurette covering the shoot in Egypt there are production designer Ken Adams' home movies of the shoot and a storyboard sequence. But, alongside Moore's new commentary, perhaps the most enjoyable extras are the TV spots and the teaser trailer introduced by Moore in character carried over from the previous issue.

5.0 out of 5 stars Premium Bond No. 6, 28 Jun 2009
By Matthew Mercy (Wigan, England) - See all my reviews
Far and away Roger Moore's best film (James Bond or otherwise), this one went out of its way to be a `big' event movie, and in most respects it succeeded. Carly Simon's iconic theme song sets the tone for a slick celebration of Bond's status in British pop culture, whilst the film's high points include the stunning Barbara Bach as KGB agent Anya Amasova, Richard Kiel's ludicrous but still impressive Jaws, some great stunt work, impressive set design, and a suitably grand, end-of-the-world-threatening plot.

5.0 out of 5 stars Roger's fav movie and one of mine, 28 Dec 2008
Roger Moore says that this is his favourite bond movie that he did and I agree that this is great movie in the series. It has some of the most recognisible moments in bond movie history including the underwater car sequence (the best car sceane in bond films ever) and cliff ski jump revealing the union jack flag (brilliant) and one the best villans ever in the 7 ft Jaws and Barbara Bach is also good as the leading lady. Possibly the best of the bond movie blockbusters, and certainly a hight point in the series.
