When the first twinkling pretty notes of opening track "A Manha Na Praia" ( that trips off the tongue doesn't it?) cascaded out of my speakers i thought ohh this very nice but it will get very boring very quickly. Except I hadn't reckoned for the juddering deep bottomed burst of sonorous fuzzy static that suddenly burst forth , shaking the fillings loose from a couple of my teeth and blowing the few remaining leaves off the trees across the road from my house. But it encapsulates nicely what is s great about this album . You never now what to expect and just when you think you do something contrary invariably happens.
III is actually the third album( neat hint there of course) from this San Franciscan trio but it is their first studio effort . The group consisting of Tarentel main man Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, ex-Tussle member Alexis Georgopoulos (better known as ARP) and Troll member Scott Hewicker provide a rich brew of psychedelic rock, prog rock , with elements of dub and ambient .The music is vividly cinematic and recalls soundtracks by the likes of Popol Vuh and Ennio Morricone and Clint Mansell but at the same time they sound like Techno Animal or Aphex Twin if they had recorded for Brian Eno,s series of EG ambient albums.
From the perambulating dub-step bass and circuitous high range notes of the epic "Hallucinations " to the wispy keyboard drifts , resonant indistinct vocals and vestigial piano notes of "Trem Fantasma" to the Pink Floyd circa Meddle like "Labyrinth" this is an intoxicating aural sojourn . Curiously enough there is also a track called "Echoes" -a curious draft of phased choral vocals and genuinely outlandish electronic noises and effects. "Into The Breeze" even twists some funk into the bass sounding like a testosterone fuelled version of early Air .Only the thankfully brief discordant "Pink Light" is anything less than terrific .
Alps won't be everyone's cup of tea but anybody who has ever find themselves haunted and/or delighted by the soundtrack to a weird Italian horror film or has admired the work of the BBC,s now sadly defunct Radiophonic workshop , or anyone who has watched a film by Werner Herzog and found themselves mesmerized by the soundtrack will find much to enthral them on III.
