Product Description

CD Description

'Is It The Sea' is the third live album release from the ever prolific Will Oldham AKA Bonnie 'Prince' Billy. Recorded on his Spring 2006 Scottish tour with folk outfit Harem Scarem and Glasgow based drummer Alex Nielson, the album captures Oldham at his very best, reinterpreting and reworking songs from his extensive back catalogue. Included are rousing versions of 'Minor Place' and 'Master And Everyone' and near eight minute version of the traditional folk song 'Molly Bawn'.

5.0 out of 5 stars Is this the BBP??, 11 Nov 2008
By Mr. A. Jones "alanjones35" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have been a Will Oldham (in his many forms) for years, so was looking forward to hearing this new live album. On first hearing I was very surprised...I found my foot tapping and then my leg, that's right...I was almost dancing to a Bonnie Prince Billy album! `What on earth is he saying?!' I here you cry. Please bear with me. This album breaths new life in to some of the classic songs and some sound so different there are hardly recognizable. Not that that's a bad thing...They still manage to keep the sparseness and the raw beauty of the originals, but seem to be sang with hope. Harem Scarem provide the music and there talent really shines though.

An amazing album. 5 stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Sublime, 26 Nov 2008
By Kirky (Glasgow) - See all my reviews
I'm not sure if there's such a thing as a 'Will Oldham sound' but, if there is, then I'd say this album comes pretty close to capturing it.

It's not hard to make the link between Harem Scarem's traditional instrumentation, the high lonesome sound of the Appalachians and the music that Will made in the early 90s - though now progressed with a fuller production and a more confident front-man.

And the songs were just made for this kind of arrangement. From the jig and reel of Love Comes To Me (played here months before The Letting Go - and it's easy to imagine where the curse in a thundering Cursed Sleep came from - was released) to the deathly quiet of Master And Everyone, BPB and the band cover a lot of emotional ground. I'm not sure if he has ever released a song as haunted and chilling as Inge Thomson's title track.

The three and four part harmony singing is astonishing, especially during My Home Is The Sea - which still brings me out in goosebumps. And Alex Neilson is the perfect foil on the drums, too. Very like Jim White, which is no bad thing at all.

I was lucky enough to see four of the shows they played in Scotland in spring 2006 - though not this one - and they are without doubt the most magical series of gigs I've ever seen. To hear some of the set again in such quality is a real treat.

My only advice is to buy this on vinyl, even if you have to then go and buy a turntable to play it on, because there is a pleasant wee surprise on side 4. But if you can't do that, then even this cd version is still worth more than the five stars I could give it.
