Great product, 6 April 2009
I wanted a decent sized screen for my two kids to keep them quiet on holiday / airport, decent battery life and lightweight product. This did all that. In fact it kept 4 kids happy at the airport. I'd bought a headphone splitter and didn't realise that there were two built in so using the splitter cable we were able to keep 4 kids amused in one go whilst the adults whizzed around the duty free shops. The machine is pretty quiet and easy to use. Could not find any problems with it at all!

philips PET1031 dvd player, 29 May 2009
Product Description, "Philips PET1031"
This portable DVD player unit is described asd having a 10 inch display, incorporating a 5 hr battery life, with good sound and able to play most video formats, the unit also incorporates a USB input which will support PMP files, div x etc.
In Use Experience
Battery performance,
The battery is provided with a, "3 level status" indicator 1/ full 2/ half & 3/ empty with suprisingly little reserver when level 3 is reported, (for my unit the player shut down after approx 30 seconds of level 3 being reported).
The battery, (Li ion type) "self discharge" performance I found to be very poor, (probably due to the in built battrery safety / regulator controller unit design). It should be noted that I found the unit when, "switched off" would be almost fully discharged in around 2 weeks, in my opinion for a protable device of this type this aspect alone is very dissapointing particuarly as the battery is of the, "none removable" type so self discharge is not under user control. Clearly this unit would need to be reguarly plugged into the mains supply to keep the battery, "Topped up" which makes its use inefficient, and as a portable device somewhat limited.
In use I found that with power save option selected, the battery life was around 2-3 hrs when playing a DVD and using headphones.
Picture Quality,
The picture quality when playing DVD I found to be adequate if a little, "grainy". The picture quality, (via the USB input) when playing dix x / .avi files, (which play fine on PC with a larger screen size) I found to be very, "blocky" (perhaps the unit would be better if it included, "de blocking" controls or "filtering" options). The picture play controls do not include for frame advance when in pause mode, also the zoom options are not well implemented in so far as, "options icons" remain on screen once the req'd option is selected and can only be cleared by de-selecting zoom.
Sound Quality,
The sound quality via the in built speakers I found to be adequate, although the unit only includes very basic sound control options, (i.e vol up / down). The sound through headphones I found to be adequate although again for a DVD player of this type I would have expected at least a, "tone" control or equalizer controls to be provided, however there are none ??
In Conclusion, "2.5 Stars Only out of 5"
1/ Poor battery performance
2/ "Adequate only" picture quality.
3/ "Adequate only" sound quality.
This unit is in the higher price range for portable DVD players and as such I would have expected better performance, particuarly with respect to the inbuilt battery issues, together with sound control / picture control issues, Perhaps Philips will do better in the future ?
