Amazon.co.uk Review

Laughter and hearty guffaws abound in this comical look at 37-year-old career woman Kate Holbrook's (30 Rock's Tina Fey) desperate attempts to have a baby. Never mind that she's not married and has never been involved in a serious relationship; Kate wants a baby and will stop at virtually nothing to get one. After failed attempts at broaching the concept of conception with first dates and trying artificial insemination with the help of a sperm bank, Kate finds out that her t-shaped uterus leaves her with only a one in a million chance of conceiving a child. Adoption doesn't work out and she's left with the distasteful option of hiring a surrogate mother. Enter Chaffee Bicknell's (Sigourney Weaver) surrogate service and her recommendation of the working-class Angie Ostrowiski (Saturday Night Live's Amy Poehler) who, with her common-law husband Carl (Dax Shepard), is just desperate enough to take on the job in order to make some money, and the stage is set for baby making. As fate would have it, Angie and Carl break up just after Angie announces she's pregnant and Angie ends up moving in with Kate. Unfortunately, the two are completely incompatible and what ensues is a hysterical struggle to coexist while clashing over everything from proper nutrition to stroller selection, hair dye, and delivery options. Further complicating matters is Kate's budding relationship with ex-lawyer and juice-store owner Rob (Greg Kinnear), who just happens to be morally opposed to the whole concept of surrogate parenting. Finally, there's the question of just how fully Angie embraces the virtue of honesty. It's the juxtaposition of opposing viewpoints--so boldly stated, humorously set, and blatantly exploited--that makes this witty comedy so darn funny. Expect graphic references, raunchy humour, and a whole lot of laughter. --Tami Horiuchi

Synopsis

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler made for a dynamic duo when they hosted Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live, and the pair reunites for this comedy. Fey plays a career-driven single woman who wants a baby, so she hires her complete opposite (Poehler) to be the surrogate mother for her child.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best comedy i have seen for a long time!!, 19 Oct 2008
By Charlotte E. Mills (West Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews

Oh man! Baby Mama is one of the funniest films i have ever seen! No its not perfect, it has a couple plot holes, but its just a laid back, easy going, entertaining comedy, which was simply a terrific watch. I have watched it 6 times already! Its one of those films that you can watch over and over and still find it funny. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are obviously comedy geniuses, and being close friends for the past 15 years they have this amazing chemistry together. They just work SO well as a team. The story is funny, heartwarming and pretty crazy. Kate (Fey) cant have babies, but she desperately wants one, so she hires Angie (Poehler) to be her surrogate mother. They are complete opposites, Kate is a business woman, very intelligent and proper. Angie is a "blue-collar philly girl", who kinda gives of a white trash impression. When Angie splits up with her boyfriend Karl, she moves in with Kate and thats when the fun starts!
Its just a light-hearted family comedy, you dont always laugh-out-loud but you'll be smiling the whole way through. And the ending is perfect!
The DVD bonus material is awesome! Deleted scenes, commentaries, the usual, but there is also another ending, which is cool.
I rate this movie 5/5. Brilliant script, amazing cast and its just comedy gold!

3.0 out of 5 stars Better than expected, 31 May 2009
By Mr. David Halliday (Ilkeston Derbyshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews

Kate Holbrook decides it's time to stop putting her career first & have a baby. Problem is she can't & having exhausted all her avenues she is left turning to a surrogacy agency,( run by Sigourney Weaver having a blast as a very creepy older woman who falls pregnant at will),. The agency teams her up with redneck hick Angie & her git of a boyfriend Carl. The set-up works well when slob Angie has to move in with uptight Kate & a whole load of odd couple type scenario's are played out.
What works well is a witty script that isn't afraid to throw away a lot of it's funniest lines as quick asides or passing remarks. The gags are good & there's plenty of them. The relationship between the 2 leading women works well & the supporting actors, ( greg Kinnear as a growing love interest, Steve Martin's eco twerp boss, Weaver, Romany Malco as a busybody concierge & a few others are all good value),.
Where this fails is when the plot takes a turn for the serious that simply lasts too long and spoils the fun atmosphere. Also the ending is just so ridiculously convenient & trite it goes a long way to undermining what went before it.
This has enough to make it worth a watch & within the first half provides quite a few laughs but it very nearly fumbles the ball at the finish & so sadly is yet another Holywood also ran.

2.0 out of 5 stars Did I miss something?, 12 Jun 2009
By Grr "Gumbo" (England) - See all my reviews

I got his beacue I'm a big fan of Tina Fey's TV work and on the back of many really good reviews (echoed on Amazon as well as in the press).

I can only think that I, and my partner, missed something as we really didn't think much of it at all.

Firstly, it just wasn't funny. I mean, it made us both smile a few times but there were no laugh out loud moments. The premise perhaps never suggested a laugh a minute romp but I expected a few big giggles, it just didn't happen for me.

Secondly, the motives of one of the characters - I'm eager to avoid spoilers here - make it difficult to like, let alone empathise with, them.

Added into this; a fairly formulaic and predicatble plot, a lamentable extended cameo part for Steve Martin (what happened to him?) and a wasted Greg Kinnear and you get left with an unexciting film all round.

It's not a one star as I have certainly seen worse films but it doesn't qualify as average either.

Like I say, there have been several very strong reviews so I appreciate that maybe we just didn't 'get' the comedy but thought I'd review it as a counterbalance of opinion.
