Amazon.co.uk Review

The Scorpion King 2: Rise of a Warrior is a dazzling prequel to the 2002 adventure movie The Scorpion King, the latter starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Mathayus, the warrior who takes on an evil army attacking his homeland. The Scorpion King 2 stars Michael Copon as a young Mathayus, who trains to become one of his king's warriors and then declares vengeance on the evil Sargon after the latter kills Mathayus' father. The hero's ascension as a noble fighter coincides with Sargon's usurping of the throne, leading Mathayus to seek a supernatural means to destroy him. His quest leads him to the infamous labyrinth in which the Minotaur feasts on men, and to the underworld itself, a horrifying place in which people become ensnared and die very slowly. Accompanied by a childhood friend-turned-warrior (Karen Shenaz David) and a philosopher-huckster (Simon Quarterman), Mathayus bravely but uncertainly battles through one obstacle after another to complete his journey. Directed by Australian filmmaker Russell Mulcahy (Resident Evil: Extinction), The Scorpion King 2 is a suspenseful and sometimes startling feature, with art direction and special effects that evoke the mysteries of ancient Greece and indeed make the underworld look like a most unearthly and nightmarish place. --Tom Keogh

Synopsis

THE SCORPION KING 2 uncovers the origins of the 2002 summer blockbuster which starred Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson as Mathayus, the most fearsome desert warrior of the ancient world. Reaching deep into the past, this prequel begins with the king as a 13-year-old peasant boy (Michael Copon) who witnesses the kidnapping and death of his father at the hands of the terrifying Sargon (played by towering UFC Heavyweight Randy Couture). Thirsty for vengeance, young Mathayus trains at the Order of the Black Scorpion to sharpen his skills as a killing machine, then journeys to the underworld to retrieve the one sword that can help him defeat Sargon. When the burgeoning Scorpion King finally comes to blows with his murderous rival, the fate of the entire human race hangs in the balance.

3.0 out of 5 stars Scorpion King in waiting, 18 Mar 2009

An interesting attempt to plot the early life of The Scorpion King. In some ways it succeeds but in others it fails. Having watched The Mummy Returns (the first time The Scorpion King appears) and then The Scorpion King which was, itself, a prequel to the events of The Mummy Returns I guess the idea of traveling further back in his life was a natural step for this film. The cast are relative unknowns, although I guess the same could be said of The Rock as an actor prior to the two films already mentioned. As a swords and sorcery tale it worked pretty well but I wasn't as convinced by the lead as I had been by The Rock, who made the role so much more believable. Karen David as the companion was, I felt, stronger in her convictions and carried her part well. The action wasn't quite as "thrilling" as the DVD case lead you to believe (nor was Karen David quite as voluptuous!) but on the whole I enjoyed the film. I had intended to buy it earlier but it was wise to wait for the price to drop as I would not have been quite so happy had I paid more than I did for it. Had Stephen Sommers been involved perhaps it would have made it stronger but sadly he wasn't and the film misses his input.

As action films goes this is okay. Did not enjoy as much as the first Scorpion King but, having said that, the first film had a really good story line and the leading man was the 'Rock'. The follow up does not seem to have the quality of the first and the story line is not as captivating but, I would veiw it again. On the whole I do recommend this dvd to all who enjoy fantasy action. Yes' its worth buying.

I thought this might be harmless fun much like the previous one, but alas no these guys are even worse actors than the last lot. Complete and utter drivel don't waste your money.
