4.0 out of 5 stars Sumptious , 31 Oct 2008
By Mr. M. Purdy (Manchester, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Strange how some albums simply seem to slip through the net, especially when they have as much to offer as this under-stated offering by Danish act Our Broken Garden.
Signed to Bella Union (the acclaimed label of an ex-Cocteau Twin), this bleakly soulful collection of songs really grows with repeated listens.
Built around a mournful female voice, the bedrock of the band's sound is Talk-Talk-esque pattering drums and swelling hammond organ.
Yes, the album could do with a few pace changes, getting stuck a little too often in second gear, but there are enough quirks and chilly atmospherics to make this a genuinely beguiling experience.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ambient album of lightly gothic mood pieces, 31 Jul 2009
Taste and restraint are the watch words. Some might say bland. It's all very pretty, but it's not super beautiful or substantial. Nor is it particularly entertaining. I don't regret buying it but it's not one of the best purchases I've ever made.

The song they most sound like is the slow, sleepy, subdued "Sail To The Moon" by Radiohead from Hail To the Thief.

Does the idea of 38 minutes of stately, subdued, meandering gothic soundscapes with ethereal female vocals appeal to you?

Yes - You'll really like this. 4 stars.
Perhaps - You'll like a few tracks but the whole thing in one sitting isn't much fun. 2 stars.
No - You'll be bored out your mind. 1 star.

Personally I fall into the perhaps category. I like proper songwriting so I knew I was going to struggle with it. I think it's much better than it could have been, although it could have been a bit more varied.

1. Watermark 6:08 (4 out of 5 stars)
Stately mid-tempo music. Has slide guitar all over it (similar to the slide guitar on the opening of Pink Floyd's "Great Gig In The Sky"). Vocals remind me of Thom Yorke at his most haunted. Very lush Pink Floyd meets Radiohead sound with Michael Nyman's orchestra sawing away in the background.

2. The Blinding 3:24 (3 stars)
A bit fuller, more rockier, less ethereal track.

3. Anchoring 4:16 (2 stars)
Nice enough but unremarkable. Doesn't amount to anything although it does have some nice mildly forceful drumming on it.

4. When Your Blackening Shows 3:40 (4 stars)
Very sad sounding song with one keyboard playing sustained background notes for another keyboard to play over.

5. The Rock Collector 3:08 (3 stars)
Lyrics don't feel as deep as on the other songs. Has an abrupt ending.

6. La Sagitaire 3:14 (3 stars)
Reminds me of a Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds ballad, such as something from their Boatman's Call album. Very solid track.

7. The Samaritan 3:47 (1 star)
Boring glacial track with an odd atonal sheet metal sound buried in the mix. Too slow to be of any interest. The music and the lyrics are unremarkable.

8. Cardia 5:36 (2 stars)
A bit drab as it just repeats sounds I've already heard from previous tracks. Nice hammond organ ending.

9. My Kinship 5:08 (3 stars)
Pretty enough but doesn't go anywhere.

I like to make EP playlists out of albums on my iPod. Tracks 1, 4 and 6 made the cut.
