    I bought this as a first step into the HDD/DVD recorder market, while most features were OK and picture quality was good etc. there was one major flaw: it is impossible to change the channel using the EPG without recording!!
    I know this sounds stupid, but apparently it was not just a fault on our machine. Despite the fact that the instruction manual told us how to do it, it didn't work. So, I phoned Toshiba's technical support and they told me that this model just doesn't do that!
    If you cannot use the EPG to choose a channel, that makes the 'pause live TV' function rather useless and it means you still need to keep a set top box for watching TV live (getting rid of this was one of the purposes of buying this product).
    In the end I have had to send it back, as it is unfit for the purpose I bought it for at a loss of postage one way, I am now hoping that I can buy a machine of a different make that will not disappoint me quite so much.

    Excellent product, very easy to install and to use. Upscaling works a treat. As good as Sky HD.
    Runs very quiet with 250Gb Hard drive. Thomson Sky HD unit I tried was extremely noisy with only 160 GB's.
    This unit is for me the better option for viewing 1080P images.

    Toshiba RD88DT Freeview+ 160GB Hard Drive DVD Recorder 1080P Upscaling

    Bought this player today and thought I'd share my experience.

    I've decided to give up my lovely Sony Freeview player (VTX-800) and LG RC185 DVD VCR combi for an integrated Freeview and HDD player.

    Pros:
    - HDMI scaling is amazing quality. I have a DVI-D on my LCD and have bought a compatable lead which was a doddle to plug in.
    - Easy to record at a touch of a button.
    - Lighweight

    Cons:
    Remote - no TV interface, e.g volume control, power control.
    Set up - I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to electronics, this was a bit challenging to set up. Especially when first the HD scaling was wrong on my TV and it threw a barmy. Managed to fix it ok. It's quite squarish and not ergonomically suitable for those with smaller hands.
    - DVD playback - the most awful, high pitched noise, almost silent and discreet, as if my ears were ringing. Asked a few people to listen out for it and one person commented that "it sounds like a tape player". Not impressed at all.
    - Freeview EPG - With my previous Freeview box was far more superior, ability to jump around the guide without the channel moving like this one and was easier to use.

    So not a pleasant experience at all. I can see why people like this product but unfortunately it wasn't for me.
