5.0 out of 5 stars Superb French drama, 28 Oct 2008
By Simon F (Dublin) - See all my reviews
This is a highly engrossing and flawlessly acted French drama concerning the devestating effect a married man's infatuation with another woman has on his family, with the German occupation of France during WWII as its backdrop. The basic premise isn't necessarily the most original, but the execution is superb. The movie weaves back and forth between the past and the present of both the narrator and his parents to slowly reveal the details of the secret in quesion, one which, it transpires, still has profound effects on their lives. This is an elegant, quietly beautiful movie that fans of French cinema/drama should find much to love about.

2.0 out of 5 stars A Secret, 5 Feb 2009
A Secret. Based on true events, it tells of the secrets harboured by a French Jewish family torn apart by sexual passion and the Holocaust. It stars a wooden Cecile de France, a non convincing Patrick Bruel, Julie Depardieu, the new Bond villain Mathieu Amalric and the lovely Ludivine Sagnier (Swimming Pool) A fractured time line covers five decades, with the present in black and white and the past in colour. Other than the colour the past decades are not clearly defined. No real emotion or drama. In fact it's a little flat considering its potentially harrowing subject matter.
