YE5SELS ~ WHITE FIElDS AND OPEN DEVICES
(CUCKUNDOO)
8/10
It takes a while, but when it hits - two minutes into
the colossal 'Look At That Cloud!' when the sunburst
guitars detonate and you realise the last 38 minutes of your life have dissolved - it becomes clear this Leeds quintet have produced a quite brilliant work of art. Between
'A Hundred Times In Every Direction''s rolling thunder and the tinkle of 'Walking Through walls', Vessels show
cataclysmic dynamics and a battering ram approach to melody can still thrill when Japanese noise-merchants Envy already own the genre. And in closers 'Two Words & A Gesture' and 'Wave Those Arms, Airmen' they have two trump cards to convert even the most vehement unbeliever. Ben Patashnlk

Empty Vessels make the most noise? They certainly do here
With Foals bringing their fiddly math rock to the masses and Sigur Ros soundtracking any programme with an animal
in it, Vessels have chosen a good time to join the pack. The shifting dynamics of their slow-building epics, all crashing climaxes and layered guitar effects, may sound rather familiar, but stick around and this album reveals itself in all manner of thrilling ways. Vessels are effectively an instrumental band with metal-like guitars, though not afraid to surprise with sudden gorgeous harmonies on Walking Through Walls or a burst of
explosive electronics on album closer Wave Those Arms, Airmen (the most post-rock song title ever?) .. With two
drummers and a guitar sound to terrify Metallica, this young Leeds five-piece have produced a debut of impressive
power. JAMIE BOWMAN
