Amazon.co.uk Review

Bringing together the undisputed talents of Ben Miller and Alexander Armstrong for a brand new BBC sketch show, The Armstrong & Miller Show’s first series now arrives in its entirety on DVD. It’s been many years since the pair joined forces for the earlier Armstrong & Miller, and in that time, they’ve come up with a whole host of new characters to keep us amused.

Thus, we get to meet the husband who can’t work out that his wife his having an affair with his best friend, and instead chooses to believe some of the wild explanations he’s offered. There’s the dentist and his inappropriate comments, usually uttered while his patient’s mouth is wide open. Or what about the brilliantly inspired SatNav system that comes up with an abundance of reasons for not taking certain routes? These, and many more, jam-pack all of the episodes of the new Armstrong & Miller Show.

The series packs in many laughs, and it’s a mixture of the quality of writing and skill of the two lead performers that really make it soar. The Armstrong & Miller Show may not go to the lengths of Little Britain to mine its laughs, but in many ways, it’s the better show. It’s tighter, more imaginative, and when all said and done, much funnier too. Recommended. --Jon Foster

Ben Miller and Alexander Armstrong star in the hit BBC comedy sketch programme the armstrong and miller show.

The line-up of characters, includes Brabbins and Fyffe, the filthy alter-egos of Flanders and Swann; the Inappropriate Dentist, who regales his captive audience with tales of swinger parties and the state of his pet dog’s prostate; Tony and Dimitri, a hapless football manager and his Russian oligarch boss; and wartime fighter pilots, talking in modern-day street lingo. Wince at the near-the-knuckle instructions of a politically incorrect sat nav, and marvel at the very existence of Pru and Miranda, two fat ladies with the difference that they can neither cook nor run Dandy Lion’s, their brain-meltingly inefficient vegetarian restaurant in Hampstead.
And that’s just a taster – there are nearly 100 other characters in the series, all with a hint of Armstrong and Miller’s exquisite nose for the absurd.

“Deftly written, expertly performed, different, original” --Guardian Unlimited
“Superior comedy…an absolute treat” --Observer

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written and very funny., 29 April 2009
By Jo (France) - See all my reviews
I felt obliged to write a review because the 1 star rating given by the previous review is, in my opinion, inexplicable. This show is laugh-out-loud funny, the sketches are just the right length and the returning characters are sufficiently different each episode to be surprising and never boring, whilst retaining their 'catch phrases'. Most episodes are a mixture of the regular characters and a couple of slightly longer stand alone sketches. I have watched this dvd several times with very different audiences and so far everyone has loved it. The series is very like the early series of The Fast Show - if you liked that I'm sure you won't be disappointed with Armstrong and Miller.

4.0 out of 5 stars Underrated and Great Fun, 8 May 2009

I disagree with the one star review. Okay, not every sketch works - even the greatest sketch shows were very much hit and miss - look at Monthy Python, Two Ronnies, Smith and Jones, Fast Show or Little Britain - but some sketches are brilliant. The street-talking pilots are clever and the cavemen sketches are genius.

I would suggest making up your own mind as to the star rating. It may not always be laugh out loud but it is very entertaining and both Miller and Armstrong are such great comic performers. Timing, voices and mannerisms all add to the strong comic characters they create.

I'm also glad to read that Ben Miller is such a good bloke - he always comes across that way.

I think this is pretty good bearing in mind this is their fifth series (four for channel four - see other review) and I look forward to number six. I think in the current climate where there are so many sub-par comedy shows on TV, this old-school style show works for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Armstrong & Miller, 2 Jul 2009

If you're wavering between buying this or not, just buy it! Armstrong & Miller is smarter than the average sketch show - there are so many memorable characters; the street-talking spitfire pilots, "Daily Mail reader" sat-nav, inappropriate dentist, the list is endless!
This lacks the dodgy moments that you find in so many other similar shows. The whole series is witty and subtle, and out of the same stable as Mitchell and Webb. Guaranteed laugh out loud comedy for the more discerning!
