Product Description

Ribald comedy starring Steve Carell. Andy Stitzer (Carell) is a 40-year-old geek who works in an electronics store and seems content with his life and with his collection of comic books and action figures. But when his co-workers find out that Andy is still a virgin, they decide to set him up with a woman so he can finally have sex. After some horrendous dates, Andy meets single-mother Trish (Catherine Keener), a woman who genuinely seems to like him and who has just come out of a destructive relationship. But what Andy's friends don't know is that Trish isn't quite ready for a physical relationship with him yet, and that he's going to have to wait a bit longer before he can lose his virginity.

From Amazon.co.uk

Cult comic actor Steve Carell--long adored for his supporting work on The Daily Show and in movies like Bruce Almighty and Anchorman--leaps into leading man status with The 40 Year-Old Virgin. There's no point describing the plot; it's about how a 40 year-old virgin named Andy (Carell) finally finds true love and gets laid. Along the way, there are very funny scenes involving being coached by his friends, speed dating, being propositioned by his female manager, and getting his chest waxed. Carell finds both humour and humanity in Andy, and the supporting cast includes some standout comic work from Paul Rudd (Clueless, The Shape of Things) and Jane Lynch (Best in Show, A Mighty Wind), as well as an unusually straight performance from Catherine Keener (Lovely & Amazing, Being John Malkovich). And yet... something about the movie misses the mark. It skirts around the topic of male sexual anxiety, mining it for easy jokes, but never really digs into anything that would make the men in the audience actually squirm--and it's a lot less funny as a result. Nonetheless, there are many great bits, and Carell deserves the chance to shine. --Bret Fetzer --This text refers to the DVD edition.

Quite simply this is a very funny film. Given the subject matter it
could have been pretty crude and one dimensional. However it is a
thoughtful and interesting movie. Basically a nerdy computer store
worker lets slip to his male co-workers that he is a virgin. They make
fun of him at first but then vow to help him "break his duck". Hilarity
ensues. However we gradually see that his friends have plenty of
relationship issues of their own and maybe they aren't the best people
to be advising him.

One minus point would be that the film is maybe 15 minutes to long. The
problems between Carell's and Keener's characters are dragged out just
a bit.

Great performances from Carrell, Keener, Rudd and Rogan and from the
rest of the excellent supporting cast.

My favourite bits? -The waxing scene - (of course) - Jonah Hill trying
to buy the platform heeled shoes in the eBay shop - The Age of Aquarius
number over the closing credits

After reading some of the reviews i was disapointed to see 1 and 2 star ratings because this is a brilliant and funny film and could be related to in some people. Steve Carell makes the role believable and the general appeal of the film is the sillyness as can be seen from the title so people should lighten up as you have a good idea what the film will be like from the name but oh well it is worth a watch(or 10 ;) so if you like to laugh i cannot recomment this film more highly

While I don't usually go for modern, mainstream Hollywood comedy - it often feels too familiar and too obvious - this really worked for me.

Funny and sweet, 'The 40 Year Old Virgin' film starts from a high concept premise, but adds heart and soul, along with a bunch of laugh-out-loud moments.
The acting and writing, even in the small character roles, is excellent.

A side note; I saw this 132 min unrated version and loved it, but many film savvy friends who have seen both actually feel the original 117 minute
version actually flows better, and keeps a better pace.

If you are a 40 year old virgin you may find this film uncomfortable. If however you are an average human being who has attempted to connect with the opposite sex or even your own sex you will find this hilarious.

Originally rented this movie not expecting a lot. Boy was I wrong, we have since bought the DVD and usually watch bits of it about once a week.

The dialogue is an accurate interpretation of how adults interact with each other, constantly bickering more like children. The one upmanship of not admitting to what you are really thinking or feeling. The poor descriptions by characters about what life is about. The frustrations of embarrassing yourself in front of others.

It is hard to explain all the excellent bits without inclduing too many spoilers, however the actors involved obviously all get on with each other extremely well and this shines through. Although not all the actors involved in this film are well known they are superb at what they do.

Please see this film and do yourself a favour :)

This film makes me laugh every single time I watch it. It is so frustrating when people cannot appreciate films in their own right and genre. There are people out there who may have been in Andy's position! You can just tell the cast are loving every minute of this. Its got a believable structure and script, and a perfectly-gelled cast. The gag reel proves this!

This is really quite an entertaining film. All about the often embarrassing male pursuit for sexual adventures, and the occasional bizarre outcomes, this film has some very funny scenes indeed. It's slightly zany, and very much tongue in cheek, but, the message seems to be, our 40 year old hero is more like us than we'd care to admit. Good fun with plenty of laughs.

From the writing expertise of Judd Apatow and Steve Carell comes this Mature, very Crude but incredibly funny Film about a Geeky Middle Aged Electronic Store worker with a Secret to [Not] tell. After a very successful Poker game with his Colleagues, his Secret comes to the surface (If you haven’t guessed by the title, He’s a 40 Year Old Virgin). His colleagues try and give him a helping hand in trying to lose it, so then starts the process of trying to get this guy laid. In his [reluctant] pursuit of losing it, a typical romance progression starts to make an appearance. I say Typical because, you can guess how the story will play out, it doesn't take a genius to know how it’s going to go, however Apatow and Carell found a way to create a Romance Progression we’ve seen hundreds of times before but prevent it from being stale and boring.

From start to finish there is enough happening to keep you entertained and its not always the Main Character, with Exceptional performances from; ‘Paul Rudd’ who plays David an Emotional wreck who isn’t quite over his Ex, ‘Seth Rogen’ – Cal, a Cool talking pot smoker (Rogen i’m starting to see a pattern in the Characters you play mate, Not complaining though) and ‘Romany Malco’ who plays Jay, A womanizer trying to hide his infidelities from his partner. Together they create a friendship bound to keep you entertained and laughing from start to finish.

I would say though that this isn’t a film for any of you who are easily offended, as this film contains a lot of Sexual References, Nudity, lots of swearing and the occasional bit of racism.
