Manufacturer's Description

Amazon.co.uk Review
There never was a video game of Casino Royale, but now Activision is making up for lost time with a title that incorporates both Casino Royale and its immediate sequel, Quantum of Solace. It’s primarily a first-person shooter, but it does switch to an over-the-shoulder view when hiding under cover or taking part in interactive cut scenes.
Daniel Craig is a big games fan and has taken a personal interest in the game
Almost everything in the game can be destroyed or damaged
Stealth is just as important as gunplay when you’re James Bond
Close combat switches out of first person view for a more cinematic effect

Just like the Bond movies, the game offers a mixture of action and stealth, with the chance to take down enemies instantly if they don’t see you. You’ll almost always be outgunned, but you’re given clues as to which strategy to take by the changing music.

Bond's aresenal has been slimmed down in the new films, so it makes sense that there aren’t many gadgets in the game. There is an online multiplayer mode that pays homage to past classic Bond games such as GoldenEye 007. Which should hopefully make Bond’s video game comeback as successful as his cinematic return.

Key Features
  • You only live twice: Recreate the stories of both Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace in one game, including deleted scenes and new side missions.
  • Duty calls: The game uses the same graphics technology as Call of Duty 4, including bullets that realistically pass through wood and other materials.
  • You know his name: The game features not only the voice and likeness of Daniel Craig, but also Judi Dench as M, Mathieu Amalric as villain Dominic Greene, and Olga Kruylenko as Camille.
  • Shaken not stirred: A mix of first- and third-person viewpoints allows for both shooter action and tense stealth-based exploration.
  • Licence to kill: Battle friends in the online mode in a wide range of game types.
About the Developer: Treyarch
One of publisher Activision’s biggest internal studios, Treyarch have worked on many of the company’s best known titles, from the Spider-Man movie tie-ins and spin-offs to several of the Call of Duty sequels and, of course, the new James Bond game, Quantum of Solace.

3.0 out of 5 stars Licence to thrill & frustrate in equal measures, 8 Nov 2008

OK...I admit it! I was suckered in and bought this game purely based on the movie tie-in !! I admit I was a bit skeptical, (as licensed products are commonly victim to short development cycles and a lack of overall effort) and while this isn't quite the "must have" title I'd hoped for, it's an interesting design with some great ideas. The execution, however, never quite pans out as you would hope.

The developers went with a book design for Bond, so you'll turn your DS on its side, and have the option to use any face button, d-pad direction, or shoulder tap as the game's main action key. Everything else is touch-based, and since the game follows a somewhat close camera of Bond as he runs around 3D environments in a simpler, similar, Metal Gear type design, that includes everything from running, fighting, shooting, jumping, sneaking, and quick close-quarter combat on unsuspecting enemies.

From the design standpoint, the game seems to all be there, and general mobility in the game is decent, with a simple "drag to move" mechanic in place similar to Phantom Hourglass, but there's a fundamental issue with all-touch gameplay, and it centers around one key area; combat!. During combat the camera zooms in behind Bond, and you are required to make line & circle drawings for different attacks which are very unreliable, with the biggest offender being the "hold the stylus on the far left or right of the screen to block" concept. Since you're drawing all your punches and grabs on the screen, a tap and hold doesn't always register (sometimes the game thinks you're starting a line), so Bond can often get his butt kicked in a fist fight. The concept is there, as you've got some neat animations and a unique fighting mechanic worked in, but it doesn't translate as well as it could have into the game.

If you can get into the main gameplay though, Bond is a great overall package that pushes DS interface and depth in a big way. The Bond feel really comes across in the menus, front end, and even the game's 2nd screen is filled with a very 007-inspired map and icon system that animates and moves in a very sleek, fluid way. Quantum of Solace isn't a bad little action game on DS, but it is not as clever & sleek as it thinks it is!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not nearly as bad as people say, 3 Jan 2009

First of all - ignor the pictures currently on amazon- they are from the xbox version (I wish the DS had graphics like that!!)

This game has taken a lot of stick on many review sites, with one reviewer going so far as to label Quantum of Solace "the worst game of all time". Ridiculous.

For anyone who has ever played a 007 game before the format is simple and familiar enough, the main difference being almost total use of the stylus. You touch the screen, 007 walks to that point, etc. In fact, throughout the entire game you will only use one button and the stylus. You hold the DS "portrait" (like a book), the left hand screen used as a map and the right hand screen (the touch screen) used to see what you are doing.

The stylus use may take a little getting used too, but you should pick it up quickly enough. Once you have completed the game (if you get that far), there is nothing left to do apart from retry the old levels - but the game lets you stipulate extra conditions to make them harder (e.g. "you must complete the level in under 10mins" or "you must complete the level without firing a gun" etc).

All in all a pretty enjoyable game- not the best but certainlty not the worst. Considering the current price on amazon it's well worth it.

2.0 out of 5 stars Oh Oh 7!, 3 Nov 2008

Some thought has gone into this game, just not enough. It is different from other Bond games in that you can't just pick it up and enjoy yourself shooting the villains or blowing things up. No, you first have to endure a laborious tutorial to learn all of the pinickity controls which will make the game impossible to play whilst on a train or bus or anywhere else you can't give the damn thing at least 100% of your attention. You will run out of ammo far too quickly and not be able to find any other supplies, but instead keep finding poker chips or playing cards, which are no use when you keep getting pounced on by villains you can't see until you have managed to position the mini Bond in just the right place to make the buildings opaque...by which time you are dead and have to start all over again! Sienna (I only know it is sienna, because that is the name of the level) has been demolished and replaced with something akin to the roof tops of New York, all flat with lots of doors leading into identical stair wells. What happened to the crumbling medieval, orange tiled roof tops from the film?...very lazy. If you enjoy being frustrated beyond belief (I nearly threw it under a train the second day I had it), then this is the game for you. Personally I'd recommend Lego Batman or Indy, at least they make you laugh. I can only assume the developers ran out of time and didn't finish the job..there is no other excuse!

Have not played on it alot, controls are a little weird at first, but surprisingly work well. The game itself does not really grab my attention.
