Synopsis

On holiday in Marbella, three spunky Leeds Lasses accept the invitation of an evening's cruise on a luxury yacht by group of lustful toffs. It's not long before the bunch are indulging an orgy, spurred-on by lashing of drugs. When one of the couples attempt a bizarre sexual position—the 'Donkey Punch' of the title—the girl dies, while the remaining seven descend into paranoia and a bitter fight for survival, miles from the shoreline...


Making his feature film debut, writer/director Oliver Blackburn has created an intense and claustrophobic film that stands alongside Roman Polanski's KNIFE IN THE WATER andGeorge Miller's DEAD CALM as a fine example of the sea-bound thriller, with stand out performances from its cast of upcoming British talent, including Jamie Winstone (KIDULTHOOD), Nichola Burley (LOVE + HATE) and Tom Burke (I WANT CANDY).

First off:- WARNING to anyone with a shiny new blu ray player and HD TV THIS IS NOT A HIGH DEF VERSION OF THIS FILM. Quite frankly I think the people behind this release should be THOROUGHLY ASHAMED of themselves at releasing a blu ray of this film not in HD. This is the first instance of this that I have come across and I will from now on NEVER assume a blu ray is HD, I'll be checking first. If you want this film buy the DVD (ALL blu ray players also play DVDs) or source one of the proper HD blu ray versions that must be out there somewhere.

The picture quality of this film was so bad even with my built in upscaler it is difficult to rate this film and ignore that fact but I shall try.

I thought this film was a little low budget tense british gem. For sure it uses all the standard tropes for a film of this genre but the setting is less common and all the more refreshing for that. Make no mistake this no 'Dead Calm' but it is good nevertheless.

Three birds out for kicks in the Med take up some guys offer of a trip on a yacht for which these four guys are crew members (the owner is somewhere else). We have the obligatory Tart, the tough girl, and the sweet innocent girl trying to forget her ex. The guys are two brothers, the skipper and the druggy. The tension mounts pretty quickly and the knowledge that it's all going to end in tears is rewarded quite early in the film. How many die? How many survive? Now that would be telling! There are at least two good kills and two surprises. The girl who played the big brother staff member in 'Dead Set' recently, plays her tough girl role here well as she did in that show also, she's going to do well. Thats about it really. It's worth a punt. 4/5 for the film, 0/5 because it's not HD.

I've decided to start writing this review even before the film has finished as it is exactly as i've titled it!! DONKEY POO!! Here are my main points-
Acting- What acting, awful even from the seasoned actors. Not one likable or believable character. Maybe that was the point. I especially disliked the guy with the hare-lip. Even though the girls were aesthetically pleasing its just not enough!
Plotless, pointless and pathetic!!! No backbone to this film what so ever!
Blu-ray, i thought i was watching a DVD and not an upscaled version at that, awful picture! The sound was impressive on 5.1 Dolby Surround but that is the only good thing i've got to say techincally.
The violence, sex scene and the fact that nearly eveyone one of them dies is the only reason i gave it 2 stars.
Waste of lottery money, actually it was a waste of my money!! I'm selling this on e-bay as soon as i've finished here!! Happy bidding!

Not sure about the other reviewers' comments, the quality of this blu-ray is good (on a 46" Samsung) and the film itself is a worthy 4 stars. Its good to see a decent thriller flick from Britain just about on par with the superb Dead Calm. Very believable and for that reason shocking.
