CD Description

Portland Americana group Horse Feathers selected the perfect photo to cover their album A HOUSE WITH NO HOME. The snow-topped shack in a wooded clearing could be the building in which these austere songs were written and rehearsed. The hushed mood and gentle performances come off like Elliott Smithraised in the country, and bluegrass-tinted, fiddle-laden songs like "Working Poor" and "Helen" exude the same kind of loneliness as the late indie-folk martyr. The recording is appropriately naked, giving the songs the natural, lived-in feel of something played by actual people in a room instead of in a high-tech studio.

There are some albums you stumble across in the dark, knowing nothing about the artist, the context or the style, only to be blown away and left asking "why the hell didnt anybody tell me!?"
This is one of those. Absolutely gorgeous.
Fans of Bonnie Prince Billy, Damien Jurado et al won't be disappointed.

I don't disagree with the previous reviewer in the sense that this is a very fine CD. But I do think the Bonny Prince Billy link is misleading, at least in my view - as are the other tags Amazon suggests. This does not sound like alt country, Sufjan Stevens, David Crosby, or Bon Iver. What Justin Ringle and Heather and Peter Broderick do as musicians is much closer to the strings- heavy (eg cello and violin) mode of classical/chamber folk than the reviewer suggests - as you might expect of any project involving Peter Broderick (who also plays in Norfolk and Western and well as recording in his own right and working as a classical musician).

If Crooked Still could be said to play Bluegrass, but with some of the energy and inventiveness of a classical string quintet, then these three play what's basically an introverted contemporary "folk" music but very much through the lens of contemporary classical music, with touches of the kind of Indie approach adopted by Norfolk and Western - eg in the use of brass. I don't want to be picky about all this, just maybe save a few folks money they might otherwise spend on buying something for the wrong reasons. If you want to get a feel for this, I'm pretty sure there's a good video of Curs in the Weeds on the web somewhere.

At the end of the day this is a very fine record, but probably one its best to check out for yourself via above mentioned video (or whatever) before you part with your hard-earned cash.
